(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – With a trucker trapped in his cab by live power lines on the business spur this morning, Soo public safety and power officials quickly put together a coordinated rescue.

A “semi truck that took out the power lines in front of Art Van Furniture,” the Chippewa County 911 dispatcher radioed to the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department officers and firefighters from the Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department.

The coordinated effort between all power and pubic safety officials allowed the rescue the driver in about 20 minutes – including getting power safely shut off.

The crash happened in front of Art Van Furniture located at 3889 I-75 Business Spur in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

It apparently happened roughly an hour before the business opened for the day, however employees were inside.

Sat pix of crash site GoogleMap of crash site updated

The crash was reported about 9:02 a.m. ET this morning, Thursday, April 26, 2018 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.

“I have a semi truck that has taken out a power line,” the dispatcher stated.

“The power line is wrapped around the truck,” the dispatcher told those responding.

Immediately Cloverland Electric was notified to get experts on the scene to quickly cut the power because the semi driver was still trapped in his truck by live electrical lines.

“We are still attempting to shut the power off – the driver is still in the vehicle,” a Soo officer stated over the radio at 9:16 a.m. ET.

A power outage was experienced in some small areas of the Soo – before and after the crash when power was shut down for a wider area.
“Tell Cloverland Electric they have a power pole is completely snapped right at the base,” said one officer.

The dispatcher told the officer that Cloverland Electric “are having a crew respond.”

“Let Cloverland know that we still have a driver in the truck ,” an Soo police officer radioed from the scene.

One officer asked the dispatcher to “advice the fire department that Cloverland is saying ‘do not approach the truck yet’ – they are still having issues cutting power to that line.”

Then the good word:

“Fire Command to Central the power is disconnected and we going to be taking the driver out in a minute,” stated a senior fire official at 9:22 a.m. ET.

The driver was then freed by rescuers apparently unharmed. The 2015 Hyundai trailer belongs to Trailer X Press Inc. of Grand Rapids, MI. The identity of the driver and what the rig was hauling is not known.

“Got a report of a car that rear-ended a garbage truck,” said a Delta County 911 dispatcher while sending police to the accident.

“The vehicle is disabled” due to crash damage and there was “air bag deployment,” the dispatcher told responding police officers.

Details of the crash are not known. It appears no one was injured or at most minor injuries.

Just over an hour earlier, a garbage truck was reported on fire on County Road SA near Cornell, MI in south Marquette County.

Initial reports were that only the engine compartment/cab area were involved in flames. Its not clear if the fire eventually spread to the rear of the truck.

Firefighters had to come from Forsyth Township Volunteer Fire Department, but they brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes.

In other news briefs of the morning….
A male showed up at the ER in Escanaba about the same time as the garbage truck crash – and he was reporting nagging injuries from a weekend dirt bike accident.

Its been a busy for police and other emergency folks this weekend – we’ve already done full stories on a police chase with juveniles in Gladstone, a missing snowmobiler found in Chippewa County.
However there was a lot more happening on Saturday – here are about 10 headline stories:

Anyone who has had kids knows that two year olds are acrobats that will climb anything and everything – however sometimes that innate adventuresome fun turns into a serious injury.

Parents in Garfield Township called for an ambulance late this morning, Saturday, April 21, 2018 – after their toddler took a bad fall.

Two-year-old female “who fell off of an approximately seven-foot ladder,” the dispatcher told the paramedics/EMTs.

It happened at a residence on Sandtown Road in Engadine, MI.

“She is bleeding from the ear,” the dispatcher said. The victim is “a two-year-old female who fell off a ladder – they believe it may be a seven-foot fall.”

That is the last word we have on the incident, however presumably the girl was taken to the Straits Area Hospital. Her condition is not known.

There was a strange theft call last night at the “Mom Prom” fundraiser held at the U.P. Masonic Center about 11:30p.m. ET last night Friday. Two Marquette Police Department units were sent to investigate the theft of a purse.
No word on the theft was confirmed or the purse was misplaced and then found
This year the annual fundraiser for a family-in-need was held to benefit the family of 8-year-old William Chittle of Negaunee, who has three rare medical conditions.
The fun attire includes old prom dresses, bridesmaids gowns, or anything that resembles or gives the feeling of being a princess.

A rare and mysterious “special hearing” was held this morning at the Chippewa County Courthouse.
A Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department deputy was told he was needed back at the office to attend the special hearing at 10 a.m. ET on Sat., April 21, 2018.
Judges never come in on Saturday without a very good reason – so it had to be something significant and unexpected.
Scanner listeners said they heard police say the grandfather of the children was requesting to be allowed in the hearing.
No Star Chamber, but interesting nonetheless.

Two shoplifters were busted about 3 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon at the Shopko in Marquette, MI.
They were “cooperative” with the store’s retail fraud squad.

——-

At least 3 Michigan state prison inmates were taken by ambulance on Friday night for medical reasons including a seizure and chest pains – at the Baraga Max Prison and the Chippewa Regional Correctional Facility.
Then on Saturday morning, a Gogebic County Jail inmate reportedly had a seizure and received a head injury in the jail showers.
The inmate, in his 20s, suffered a head injury – and while paramedics were told the inmate bled – one radioed doctor about the scene in the jail located in Bessemer, MI.
The blood “must have been wiped off” before the ambulance arrive, a paramedic radioed medical control at the Aspirus Grand View Ironwood Hospital.
The Gogebic County inmate “hit his head on something” and was “flopping on the floor a bit” in the showers resembling a seizure, the paramedic told doctors.

A ferry operator at one of the eastern U.P. islands called 911 Saturday afternoon because one of the idling cars waiting to get on the ferry wasn’t moving – and neither was the gentleman inside.

A U.P.-wide BOLO has been issued for a car stolen Saturday from an Ironwood, MI home just before 1 p.m. Central Time in Gogebic County
The vehicle is a red and black 2012 Mini Cooper with Texas tags: JNJ-7987

——-

Maybe suffering from Spring Fever, four escapee horses got loose and had some fun in Houghton County on Saturday morning, but as rounded up by their owner in the Atlantic Mine area.

——-

The Pickford EMS ambulance was basically totaled overnight – and had to limp back to its barn (station) – after hitting a deer. Be careful folks deer on the move in this nice weather – just like we are.

Speaking of warm weather – please beware of slip and fall accidents that are likely to happen on Saturday night (as they did Friday night) and Sunday morning (churchgoers beware). The melting snow refreezes to black ice everywhere.

(Gladstone, MI) – A group of juveniles on a motorcycle and an ATV led police on a dangerous several mile pursuit through the streets of Gladstone, MI on Saturday afternoon – before police made the decision to end the chase for safety reasons.

Late reports indicated that officers found the suspect ATV – and are still looking for and questioning teen male juveniles.

The juveniles are wanted on a multitude of probate court charges – and were riding dangerously on a blue motorbike and a green and white squad four-wheeler ATV. The officer described the vehicle as a motorcycle during the chase and later described it as a motorbike (smaller vehicle than motorcycle).

The chase started about 3:15 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon, April 21, 2018. It ended about 7 minutes later.

Gladstone Police first spotted the juveniles on 29th Street – and the chase was on.

Chase map 2

Streets and locations mentioned in the winding circular chase included 29th Street, Weston Avenue (several times), 27th Street, N. Bluff Street, a fire hall, the Fernwood Cemetery and at one point “heading toward M-35.”

The lead pursuit officer told another that the suspects were juveniles and both officers immediately had safety concerns.

One officer suggest that since the suspects are juvenile teens “it is probably correct to shut it down.”

The second officer said “I would agree.”

Police soon stopped the chase near Ketcham Street.

“Lets stop the pursuit all together,’ radioed one of the officers – as his siren blared in the background of his transmission.

Another said he could hear the ATV in the distance – and officers started driving around looking for parked vehicles similar to the ones in the chase.

“I can hear them toward South Hill Road doing circles,” one of the officer stated.
The officers were inspecting a nearby parked ATV on the 900 block of Loueda Avenue.

It appears it was the one of the two suspect vehicles.

(Iron Mountain, MI) – Dickinson County has had its heart torn out several times this winter during a period of just under seven weeks by three fatal traffic crashes and a deadly fire that have taken many young lives, destroyed countless others, and left wounds that will take generations to heal.

Built on the lumber, paper and mining industries – Dickinson County is as tough as they come – even globally famous Kingsford Charcoal was first made in Kingsford, MI.

Then there’s the indisputably the toughest of U.P. underground miners Big John in Iron Mountain. My Grandparents called him Big Bad John (like the dramatic Jimmy Dean song in Sept. 1961) and it was a must-see every time we visited the U.P.

Carried on the backs of iron ore miners and lumberjacks, this rugged county is trying to recover its footing after four winter tragedies during a terrible just under seven-week period that killed five young people between the ages of 17 and 22. Now word about the possible imprisonment of another Iron Mountain resident for causing his friend’s death.

One crash in late December 2017 took the lives of two Norway, MI girls – and then last month there were two fatal wrecks in Marquette County that claimed the lives of three other Dickinson County youths. Plus a fire in Marquette, MI killed an Iron Mountain youth, her boyfriend and unborn child.

One tragedy was an alleged drunken driving wreck that now has a young Iron Mountain man charged with killing his friend. 21-year-old Austin Keith Mitchell of Iron Mountain was arrested this week

Its one of those tragedies that is too often played out in America – two old friends from high school are out having fun – and yes drinking – before the night is over one is killed, the other jailed for his friend’s death.

While portrayed in the media and by police as just a Marquette County incident, the accident on County Road 550 has hit Dickinson County the hardest.
Friends from sports and high school in general.

Sat. Dec. 30, 2017: Two Kingsford, MI teens died in a  head-on crash in Sagola Township that injures five members of a Marquette County family

Two Kingsford teens were killed instantly and three other people were seriously injured in a tragic year-end head-on collision on M-95 in Sagola Township near the Dickinson County/Marquette County.

18-year-old Taylor Nicole Bosley and 17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml, both of Kingsford, MI, died on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017.
The teens were traveling to watch a Flivvers hockey game.

The wreck also seriously injured a family of five from Marquette County. All of whom survived.

17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml of Kingsford, MI

17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml of Kingsford, MI

Trembl was adopted from Seoul, South Korea – and was loved dearly her extended family and friends in Kingsford.Jolene Kim Treml, 17, of Breitung Township, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017.
She was born January 5, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea and was adopted by her parents, Jeffrey and Mary (McNamara) Treml. Jolene was a senior at Kingsford High School with her studies focused on nursing.

She was involved in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and had been accepted to NWTC to pursue her nursing degree next year. In addition to her studies, Jolene worked as a Dietary Aide at Freeman Nursing & Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

She was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church where she was an altar server and participated in the youth group. Jolene had the best sense of humor, always having a smile on her face and putting one on everyone else’s. She had a passion for shopping and clothing, especially her “ripped jeans.”

Jolene had a closet full of clothes but always managed to “steal” something out of her friends’ or sister’s closets. Some days she had three outfit changes before she was out the door! She had a real eye for fashion. Jolene was that person who was there in the middle of the night to listen to friends or family and was always there to help if needed.

Some of her most joyous moments were spent with her nephews, Nolan and Beau. She soaked up every minute loving her boys, and they adored their Auntie JoJo. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

According to Bosley’s obituary – she was your typical U.P. teenage girl:

Bosley received a scholarship to St. Norbert College. Bosley was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. She really enjoyed listening to music, playing the piano, swimming and was a talented artist – and enjoyed watching stock car races and following KHS sports, especially hockey.
