A Thursday morning natural gas leak at the SEMCO ENERGY Gas Company substation in Laurium, MI led to the closure of a major down street over the noon hour.

Officials have not said how much natural gas leaked.

The leak was reported about 10:40 a.m. ET on Thurs., morning, March 15, 2018.
An off-duty firefighter radioed Houghton County 911 Central Dispatch Center about a serious leak – just as SEMCO sent their own warning to 911.

It occurred at a SEMCO substation in the area of the 400 blocked of Lake Linden Avenue near Dave’s Auto – near the edge of the Laurium village limits.

A broken or failed valve was reportedly the cause of the problem. SEMCO crew arrived quickly as possible to turn off the leak and repair the problem.

SEMCO did not issue a news release about the incident, nor did officials in Houghton County officials despite the release of a large amount of natural gas.

No injuries were reported.
