Animal cruelty always increases in the winter across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Just the other night, a law enforcement officer in Delta County rescued an injured/freezing dog. Plus, last January, U.P. Breaking News ran stories on alleged mistreatment of the famous Mackinac Island horses at their sparse winter digs in the eastern U.P. A friendly dog originally thought to be a stray popped up at a Marquette school playground – cops were called – and the owner was quickly on the scene as the dog took off when its buddy had their attention distracted. Several times a day, people call cops in the U.P. To investigate animals left outside in near zero and below zero weather. How can people be cruel to animals. While it was not a case of mistreatment, we heard a report last week that a U.P. wolf got caught in a snare used for other animals – was released unharmed.
