Sturgeon River near Chassell affecting Houghton County

.River levels have stabilized on the Sturgeon River near Chassell
as the current level remains just below flood stage at 10.3 feet.
Snowmelt runoff should be minimal through Sunday morning as
temperatures remain cool. However, temperatures will rise rapidly
late Sunday and into early next week, allowing snowmelt runoff to
increase and river levels to rise again. There is still ample
snowpack in parts of the basin, especially on north aspects and
in heavily wooded areas.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Safety message…Even 6 inches of fast moving flood water can knock
you off your feet…and a depth of 2 feet will float your car. Never
try to walk…swim…or drive through such swift water. If you come
upon flood waters…stop…turn around and go another way.

* Impacts at 5000 cfs. While flooding is not expected…rivers flows
are high or expected to increase. Recreational interests should

consider protecting shoreline equipment including docks piers and
boats.

of lowland. Piers gorge rapids downstream becoming active. High flows

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – Another terrible snowmobile crash is being investigated in the Upper Peninsula.

The snowmobile accident was reported about 2:40 p.m. today, Wed., Jan. 10, 2018.

The condition of the victim has not been released – however at last report paramedics and others were preforming CPR on the man.

The crash is being investigated by authorities a wilderness area basically between M-28 and M-38 near the Sturgeon River Gorge. Its also in the area of the Ottawa National Forest.

Its not clear exactly what county because the crash is near three county lines – Baraga, Ontonogan and Houghton County lines. Among the emergency officials paged is the Covington Township Volunteer Fire Department and EMS.

The roads mentioned to responding emergency vehicles are Sturgeon River Road – and Estes Lake Road. U.P. Breaking News could not locate that road but Estes Lake is nearby – and so is Sturgeon River Gorge Road.

The male victim was found by others – and initially reported unconscious but breathing with a serious head injury. Then CPR was reported.
