(Pickford, MI) – A Soo woman has died following a tragedy while ice fishing.
Accident carbon monoxide poisoning is the cause coma and now death – after exposure to propane fumes while ice fishing. The case is being probed by the Chippewa County Medical Examiner, the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police from the Sault Ste.Marie Post.
54-year-old Jenise Lynn Corbiere of Sault Ste. Marie died of accidental carbon monoxide poisoning – after being exposed on January 3, 2017 in her ice fishing shanty on Munuscong Bay in Chippewa County.
Because of the lack of oxygen to the brain, and an hour of CPR – her death was never doubted – and she was kept alive on life support reportedly to donate her organs. This is a very serious issue that anyone who goes ice fishing needs to be very aware because it can creep up on you without notice.
By the time you know it is too late.
Propane heaters and stoves are often used to heat ice fishing shanties – and some fancy ice fishing shack have little ventilation if any -to keep out the cold. However – if you are using a heater – it must be ventilated. One person said some of the shacks “are sealed.”
The fumes contain carbon monoxide, or CO, is an odorless, colorless gas that kills and makes the victim drowsy before death.
It is unclear what happened, however several sources say the woman had been ice fishing with others near Pine Island.
It was a call that just kept getting worse last night in Chippewa County – that has had a sad start to the New Year as there was a fatal fire and a train accident in past few days.
The location of the tragedy is a popular ice fishing location near Pine Island on Munuscong Bay – that’s forms off the St. Mary’s River.
The dispatcher told responding emergency officials that they “have an unconscious female out on the ice.”
The tragic incident first came to light bout 5:30 p.m. yesterday (Tues., Jan. 3, 2017), as the Chippewa County 911 dispatch put out a page for Pickford EMS and the Raybur Volunteer Fire Department.
Officials used Dan’s Resort “as a staging area.” Dan’s resort is located at 23477 South Bay Road in Pickford, MI.
“We need the rescue sled right now,” officials said.
“Got a gentleman there on a snowmobile – who will take you out on the ice,” the dispatcher told officials.
A man on a snowmobile is reporting he “will take you out on the ice for an unconscious female.”
Then the worst: “CPR in progress out on the ice”
“Pickford Fire your rescue sled is needed for an EMS run – down at Dan’s Resort,” The dispatcher said.
On the ice were side-by-sides, 4-wheelers and snowmobiles. The ice is still to thin for vehicles although today and the next few days will make the ice even thicker due to the brutal cold.
Doing CPR the entire way off the ice by heroic citizens, the victim was brought to the rescuers staged at the resort. The victim was quickly loaded into an ambulance doing CPR from the ice to War memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Maire, MI. She is in a coma and is being kept alive on life support.
The name of the victim has not been released.

Munuscong Bay is a breeding grounds known for Pike, Walleye and Jumbo Perch fishing. Those ice fishing on the bay report masses of Jumbo Perch caught – and the walleye are biting. We mention this because ice fishing is underway in many areas – and we often just think about the fish – remember safety at all costs – please.
