(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – In Escanaba this afternoon court officials, a building inspector, police and others forcefully evicted a female squatting in a dilapidated house, Marquette police today handled a complaint about a “homeless crew,” plus a homeless man passed out on a toilet in a Marquette laundromat bathroom, a needle scare at same place earlier in day, and dozens of U.P. evictions even moments ago – and this is just in the past week.

Its soon another spring Friday Night in the U.P. If recent events are a judge – it could be a long night for U.P. cops and emergency officials.

In Delta County District Court today, the Escanaba Building Inspectors Office got court backing to evict a tenant from a home on N. 14th Street because the home is in ill-repair (a problem facing every U.P. city that has mining-era housing still in use by the poor – in fact all U.P. fatal fires are in old homes).

It seemed more like a raid than a normal eviction in Escanaba today.

The address they hit just after 1 p.m. was at 224 N. 14th Street in Escanaba (lower apartment).
Among those called to the scene were the Escanaba Police, the building inspector, the landlord – with officials armed with a handy court order.

“The tenant is a Amanda Brown,” the dispatcher said to the officer on the scene. “And Blake, and the landlord are supposed to meet there as well.”
Are police needed on the scene for standby or “in case there is trouble?,” the officer asked the dispatcher.

“Not sure, they did state its a building deemed uninhabitable by the building inspector – I think it was just a standby,” the dispatcher answered.
That’s when another official got on the radio and said he too was en-route.
The dispatcher said “Blake” but may have meant City Hall’s Blaine DeGrave, the Escanaba “Code Enforcement Official.”

Over the past week U.P. Breaking News has heard a large increase in evictions – plus police calls related to evicting people from abandoned or dilapidated city homes in Marquette County. In fact, as we were posting this story – at 3:15 p.m. ET today (Friday) – another evection was ordered in Ishpeming, MI at 230 N. Elm Street.

Last night a “homeless crew” were allegedly pounding on at least one door in the city of Marquette – resulting in a second 911 call to police on Friday afternoon. With domestic violence out of control, cops seem actually relieved to handle the more mundane, yet very important, mental issues. For example, in Houghton County today a scared woman called 911 to report someone spread dust around her house. She has called many time for many reasons. But moments later they were called to a doctor’s office for a disruptive patient.

Friday morning, Marquette Police and firefighters were called to a homeless man found passed out on a toilet of a Third Street laundromat. Earlier, county deputies visited the same laundromat because of a man reported to have a bunch of needles.

U.P. will soon not be able to sweep the problems from public view – as more and more incidents happen and social problems fester. Highly-addictive drugs like meth and heroin are flooding U.P. streets and there is a soaring problem in the U.P involving suicide, domestic violence and mental issues issues. The numbers are growing on all fronts in an exponential form – as only band-aids are put on the northern Michigan problems that once only plagued the gloomiest cities in the Lower Peninsula.

We have only two things to say to those who think we are exaggerating, or think its not a big deal, or believe we should punt it down the field like we have done as a country with North Korea. Do you think the problem just go away? Plus remember big Michigan cities are better equipped to handle the social problems – tho few are shining examples – because if they did not do something there would be many people laying dead in the street.

If history is any example, little will be done until people die. Just like the issues caused by the criminal underfunding and short-staffing at U.P. prisons. Many think it will take some COs murdered to capture Lansing’s attention. Until then prisoners will continue to be beaten, abused, and fed garbage. While experienced COs will continue to quit in droves for their own health and because it is a no-win job with no state pension.

Over the past decade, Lansing’s reaction to the far north issues by cutting funding to U.P. social programs and greedily raping the U.P. environment by destroying the deer herd and the pitiful over-site of mining-related pollution. Local U.P. governments, state officials are unable to stop the growing problems – as even well-meaning groups are unable to do more than put a bandage on the gushing problems of wounds – created by homelessness, poverty and mental health issues.

With little increase in tax revenues, local governments have offset their budget deficits by increased fees on everything – and we mean everything. Today all government-related issues in the U.P. now have an onerous fee attached.
U.P. Breaking News has documented how U.P. counties profiteer off government documents and public records – which SHOULD be no more than the cost of the paper to print document. Governments had their taxing hands tied since the Headlee Amendment. Tax revenues have dwindled since the Headlee Amendment that protects property owners from rising taxes.

As poverty and oppressive government fees continue to keep the low-income and homeless down across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, officials are not able to stop the issue from continuing to spill out into the streets causing pain, suffering and lots of your tax dollars.

Michigan’s governor has made it clear he distains the problems of the poor – and loves to squeeze every penny out of the U.P. despite the bigger cost. He has also armed landlords – many are slum lords who once watched a midnight scam involving property-buying commercials that let all think they would become overnight millionaires.

Suicides in U.P. continued this afternoon as tragically another Yooper takes his life – Lots of unreported U.P. suicides hidden from media – Public oblivious: Another recent NMU student suicide? – Marquette County school sports team suicide pact? – and it happened again today

U.P. Breaking News Ongoing Suicide Advisory – another today – 3-28-18 4:50 p.m. ET –

Another Yooper takes his life with a rope – as U.P. suicide epidemic continues with a more than weekly rate – Doesn’t count attempted suicides

Plus Another NMU suicide?/Public schools sports team suicide pact in Marquette County? – And it tragically happened again today in the U.P.

U.P. lawmakers please help – as the U.P. averaging more than one suicide per week in recent months.
Even now this moment, U.P. police are handing a hanging of a 33-year-old man. Purposely not saying location-please do not say it if you know.

Unless we have it on tape from cops, there is no way to confirm any suicides in U.P. as police are afraid to speak publicly about it and media does their obligatory and vague once a year story.

I believed for 40 years that media should not report suicides – but that tactic has not worked – it has failed miserably.

The thought was reporting suicides increases suicides – well without the reporting – the U.P. suicide rate has tripled or more.

The U.P. weekly suicide rate is fat, far beyond – way, way out of control!

Since we reported the recent hanging of a 21-year-old male student at NMU – we heard there was yet another suicide of female NMU student.

Plus have gotten unconfirmed reports that some male members of a school sports team in Marquette County – had a suicide pact but a mom found out and stopped it.

We are not (yet) saying team at this point – and if I call and ask school officials they run away like track stars. No one wants to deal with this.

Or is it better to ignore it, not try to fix underfunded and broken system, and pretend our crushing poverty rate and addictive drug crisis is not happening. Also -we need to stop stigmatizing depression. People who feel depressed should be loved and helped – not shunned and bad-mouthed by judgmental Yoopers.

One start would be to throw our past three governors in prison for not protecting our communities – dereliction of duty.

Restore funding at levels that assures follow-up care happens always and a lot.

The old U.P. treat me like a mushroom comfort because nothing ever happens in mushroom world.

Scandal Upends Community Action Agency in Alger and Marquette counties  – that provides services for poor and elderly

(Marquette, MI) – The director of the Marquette/Alger community action agency has been placed on leave as the board of directors investigates multiple accusations of sexual misconduct and one alleged victim is the Mayor of Munising, multiple sources tell U.P. Breaking News.

Amy Hodgins Lerlie

Amy Hodgins Lerlie

The board of directors of the Community Action Alger Marquette put agency director Amy Hodgins Lerlie on two weeks leave after a presentation by lawyers of the three victims.

Its unclear if Lerlie is on paid or unpaid leave. The board apparently decided it needed two weeks to do it own investigation, sources say.

Bradley Cory FB 1

Bradley Cory

Meanwhile, under scrutiny board chair Bradley N. Cory abruptly resigned for allegedly allowing his personal contacts to interfere with his job as board chair.

Community Action Alger Marquette is an agency that provides life or death help to Upper Peninsula’s poor.

The agency also oversees many badly needed services for the elderly including Lost Creek in Marquette, that offers low-income housing for the elderly.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The agency also handles the new Grandview Marquette Apartments, the renovation project at the former Holy Cross Orphanage. Grandview officials have been accused of not providing enough apartments for the low-income – because much of the funding was based on claims it will going to help the growing problem of the Marquette area poor. Grandview Apartments is located at 600 Altamont Street in Marquette.

Rod DesJardins

Rod DesJardins

One of the three allegations are sexual harassment complaints from Munising Mayor Rod DesJardins.

DesJardins is the agency’s Housing Services Director.

Lerlie reportedly arranged an agency trip that included DesJardins.

Two female employees also claim Lerlie made unwanted sexual advances.

After the allegations by DesJardins became known about the office, sources say Lerlie became defensive and angry.

Lerlie allegedly retaliated by “making ridiculous demands on him and saying demeaning untrue statements to others in the workplace.”

In fact – the CAAM office dysfunction and retaliation under Lerlie’s command was so great that sources claim she caused the Mayor DesJardins to have a massive heart attack:

The CAAM Board has known these kinds of allegations for “a long time” but did nothing until Friday afternoons meeting with lawyers. The CAAM board has allow the atmosphere to continue despite knowing what was happened, sources say.

The board allegedly allowed Lerlie “to continue working and overseeing all the employees she has traumatized.”

Lerie’s “mother is long time Marquette socialite Rita Hodgins (Lerlie) , whose close friend is CAAM Board Chair Brad Cory,” who recently resigned, our sources said.

Under Cory’s leadership the CAAM board “decided to allow Amy to continue working and have made every attempt to hide all of this.”

DesJardins suffered “a serious heart attack that required a quadruple bypass,” sources say.

DesJardins “returned to work and the work environment is extremely hostile.”

Rod DesJardins - LinkedIn 2

“Amy Lerlie also kissed 2 separate female employees on the mouth and neither woman saw it coming,” sources say.

The names of the women making sexual misconduct accusations have not been confirmed.

One accusation against Lerlie involves the firing of the head of Cross Creek.

Lerlie also oversees Lost Creek that has a separate case against her for hostile work environment.

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – In the past few days, U.P. Breaking News has heard increasingly viscous domestic violence incidents – some result in arrest – others are just scary.

This holiday season will be one of the worst – for someone you know who is poor. Cutbacks, low paying jobs, evictions, high insurance premiums and other societal problems are growing by leaps and bounds. We base this on listening to thousands of hours of police calls in the U.P. in past year.

When I arrived the U.P. in 1988 these issues were either hidden or not as prevalent. U.P. Breaking News believes Yoopers have been spoon-fed a tiny amount about what happens around the peninsula via the U.P. media being content only reporting press releases. Don’t rock the boat baby – comes to mind.

For decades arrest records have been kept from the public and journalists except for those the police approved. Well as laws show this is illegal, more agencies are becoming open on arrests through certain technology (so far only 3 in the U.P.) – problem is many do not release mugshots and many do not release charges (which makes the rest of that info worthless).
U.P. Breaking News is bringing you a minute dose of reality – sad its mainly on the backs of the poor. I remember a U.P. in the 60s where everyone was just expected to do the right thing including speak out against injustice like many of Yooper great-grandparents that brought families to the U.P. – some from countries where injustice prevailed and even was demanded by elite.

So this I do in honor of my great grandparents and my grandparents – as I was always taught to do what was correct – not what was easy.

Folks we can do better.

Early this Sunday morning (12-3-17) – things were anything but peaceful in numerous U.P. homes including in the Trowbridge Park area of Marquette Township.
A man and woman – both drinking – were fighting and she claims he destroyed the Christmas Tree and punched a hole in the wall. Not sure how that one ended.

To make things worse, the suicide epidemic in the U.P. took an ugly step forward on a Sunday morning, somewhere in the U.P. a woman used toxic gas to effectively kill herself. She has been admitted to the “step down unit” at Marquette hospital and her vitals sounded very poor including no absolutely no reactions. Not sure if vehicle exhaust or what kind of gas, she was brought to Marquette by Beacon Ambulance.

Between poverty, joblessness, unfair burdens on the poor, homelessness (lots) and the meth and heroin epidemic – the U.P. could do much better. It’s like the current resources on all the issues are at a bare minimum. Those with big money should look into their heart this holiday season.

Friday evening as a Christmas parade was to start in Escanaba, MI – not far away just inside Menominee County was a fight that made dispatchers upset – as it was clear some terrible things were being done and yelled.
U.P. Breaking News believes we know who got arrested, but her name did not come with a charge in the online Menominee County Jail records. It was the only arrest of that day.

Here are some of the most serious jail bookings in Marquette and Delta counties in past few days:

“I am sick and tired of being assaulted,” said a Menominee County woman just before she was arrested today for domestic violence

A cry to stop U.P. domestic violence emerges from the rural northern Michigan wild in remote Menominee County

(Menominee County, MI) – Had she had enough?

Or was she the aggressor?

That is not clear – but the 57-year-old woman reportedly told the 911 dispatcher:
“I am sick and tired of being assault,” when she reported a male friend as the aggressor who was fleeing despite having numerous driver’s license suspensions and revocations.

The woman remained in the Menominee County Jail (1-26-17) at 6 p.m. ET, 5 p.m. CT

After a couple hours the man was located – and was charged with traffic offenses – but he was not booked into the Menominee County Jail like the woman who reported the assault.

She was arrested and charged with domestic violence.

“I am sick and tired of being assaulted,” said a Menominee County woman just before she was arrested for domestic violence

We have the names of both, and could not confirm his arrest. However, she was booked into the jail.
While her cry might be a powerful statement for all women, domestic violence in growing in the U.P. So does poverty, substance abuse, homelessness, and mental health issues – all of the state programs to address the issues have taken severe budgets cuts over the past 8 years.

Another southern U.P. DV case has man a fugitive:

Meanwhile, the Escanaba Department of Public safety is still asking for the public’s help to track down a man wanted for an alleged attack on his girlfriend and a child.

The manhunt continues tonight for an alleged vicious Escanaba man wanted for numerous felonies including attempted strangulation, child abuse, domestic violence and unlawful imprisonment of the the victims.

U.P. Breaking News joins the police, victims, and public tonight – we want him caught

21-year-old Dustin Lanaville of Escanaba – but has lived in Menominee County – is wanted on charges of third degree child abuse, assault by strangulation, unlawful imprisonment, domestic violence, and interfering with electronic communications.

Justin Lanaville is said to be in hiding – maybe in Schoolcraft County.
domestic violence and child abuse charges.
U.P. Breaking news has been contacted by both the suspect and his father – and we have encouraged the the young man to surrender.

He has taunted the victims with threats of suicide, and that sparked outrage on both sides of the dispute. The suspect and his friends apparently were trying to convince others that the charges had been dropped. They have not.
If you have any doubt look at the Escanaba Department of Public Safety Facebook page.

Why we do it:

Domestic violence calls in the Upper Peninsula – and suicidal people – keep police in the U.P. Busy every day. Every day, U.P. Breaking News hears numerous domestic violence cases that are investigated by police.

We have been highlighting the federal cases – that involves American Indian Nations across northern Michigan.

The reason: The feds make public records easily available – although it costs us a fortune. However, the feds still charge 100 times less than the local governments in the U.P.

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – As the obligatory “year-ender” stories will soon be in the U.P. media – as the U.P. “news readers” (TV, radio and newspaper) recall what they can about 2016.

U.P. Breaking News doesn’t expect the “news readers” to tell you what really happened (out of their press release world) – so we will.

Soon you will seen the U.P. media reminiscing about 2016 – in the same way they have since TV first came to northern Michigan. The papers sell their special year-end sections and rehash their original hash – but nothing really new.

In fact- even the TV reports look the same each year – just different names and places but often same annual events and perspective.

As the year 2016 ends, is the U.P. ready to face its issues?

Or will we collectively wait til the issues become too big and more people die?

Shall we punt into a Yooper end-zone – or take the first steps: Admit the problem and try to offer solutions.

First an fyi:

  • #1  – U.P. Breaking News is starting a series of stories on unsolved murders in the Upper Peninsula – plus suspicious deaths that seem to fall through the cracks even worse than the unsolved murders. If you know someone whose murder has not been solved – or there are highly-questionable circumstances – please give us a call. 906-273-2433
  • #2 –  If you have time – please join me this Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. in Marquette County Circuit Court.   U.P. Breaking News is under a judge’s demand that we appear in a Marquette courtroom. Against our will, we are being forced to go to that hearing Tuesday where a judge is trying to “restrain” U.P. Breaking News.
  • #3  – U.P. Breaking News is starting a series of stories revealing the truth behind Marquette County’s so-called torture case. The public has been misled by the press and officials to think it is comparable to the horrendous Cleveland torture and sexual assault case. Not even close – there are absolutely no similarities. Even Michigan’s high courts agree the case has big issues.  It’s one of those rare cases where the suspect may actually be innocent (according to some two dozen women). One so-called victim has died of a drug overdose. U.P. Breaking News feels very sorry for the only surviving “victim” Angel – who has actually been victimized and used by everyone involved. We have even heard there might be drug-addicted newborn baby thrown into the mix involving this case. U.P. Breaking News is going to name names – and show all faces.

Now – as U.P. news organizations prepare to tell you about what happened in 2016 – they will recall all the good news (nothing wrong with that) and the criminal cases in state courts. The U.P. news readers serve a niche for those Yoopers who like to dream we are in the 1950s.

But today’s modern Yooper demands more of their media. That’s why U.P. Breaking News devotes so much time, energy and money – instead of retiring on the Chocolay River – as a public service and to open your eyes.

If we break the ice, maybe one day there will be a media outlet in the U.P. that asks questions involving critical thinking – not just fluff or same ole stuff.

Believe it or not – the following is a description of the Upper Peninsula – a place that we think is still “someplace special” but now with an asterisk.

The following happened in final half of 2016:

  • Unsolved murders grow across northern Michigan including questionable deaths written off by media – and people who carer about victims claim little police effort is put into the deaths
  • Very strange deaths being quickly ruled suicide. Questionable “suicides” that are decided virtually overnight – in some cases, not even one day of investigation is given for each ten years of a person’s life – even in the oddest of cases without suicide note
  • U.P. police killing two retired men in their own homes during “well-being” checks – ruled OK bu local cops, probing local cops. And MSP says life goes on except for those shot. There was a third person shot by U.P. police that is also mental health related but that person is recovering.
  • Inmates strangely dropping dead in U.P. prisons in alleged unprecedented accidents. Plus inmates medical scandal leading to deaths and injuries – or many prisoners majorly ill from contaminated or under-cooked meals.
  • Few cops on the road; deadly under-staffing. Police and Corrections Officers are understaffed beyond bone that WILL lead to the death of an U.P. police officer – its only a matter of time before the rubber band breaks. Plus the few cops on road asked to be on-the-scene psychiatrists putting their lives in danger.
  • Skyrocketing suicide rate – and Pathways plus other community health organizations understaffed – and accused of not doing good job with their hands tied.
  • The Raging Children of the U.P. – Even this week U.P. Breaking News heard reports of teachers being attacked by students – from 7 years old – to their early teens. Kids attacking parents, grandparents and the other night attacking people attending a school function at a U.P. school named “Lincoln”
  • U.P. Dumpster Diving, Homelessness, Crushing U.P. Poverty at all time high – this winter expect the U.P,. homeless to freeze to death especially those not welcome at the overwrought shelters like those homeless with substance issues who are sent to fend with the wolves.
  • U.P. “News Media” in 2016 become “Fake News” at your doorstep – by going from simply not reporting stuff – to being duped or bought. For example, U.P. Breaking News was the only media not fooled by MDOC lies about the Kinross Riot. Newspapers and TV claimed that a riot was not happening at Kinross. U.P. Sunday papers had rotten egg omelets on their face with that one – TV was alseep.  Now the”news regurgitators” at the Hoton paper claim there are only 5 suspended black football players – rather than seven. Fake news in print delivered to your door! I would mention TV in all this but they are clueless about both.

Here is is more info on above:

First my message to the “reporters” who are just “news readers” or regurgitators – but want things to change:

To those reporters in the U.P. who are working under the bonds of their bosses – do not worry – newsrooms in other parts of the U.S. actually take their jobs seriously. U.P. newsrooms are very different from others. In some other newsrooms, you do not get discouraged when you come up with new ideas or hard news.

U.P. Breaking News is almost the only news media with the courage to tell you about serious (non-fluff) issues – the majority of other U.P. media hides like puppies.

I remember when paramedics and EMTs objected to be called simply “ambulance drivers.” That’s my comparison for the feckless members of the U.P. media – the media who are merely “news readers” or “news regurgitators” aka ambulance drivers. The difference is whether you read a press release with only the facts provided – or whether you look into the facts and ask questions.

Do you spend a few moments doing critical thinking before you go to a press conference? The weak “news regurgitators” are very obvious if you listen to their stories. Some of the U.P. young and older media really want to be journalists not press release puppets – but are held back by bosses with no guts.

But for example – the rest of U.P. media still has not gotten the Finlandia racism scandal correct.
It is “The Finlandia Seven” – not “The Finlandia Five” (Folks, send your old calculators to the editors at the Houghton paper to help them with math). But, at least the Hoton newspaper did a story with the main stuff coming from us, I do not even want to characterize how the other media handled it.

My message to police who really care (bored or puzzled reporters can stop reading now):

Kinross inmates still go to the hospital on a weekly basis but a federal court lawsuit filed this week may help explain some of the medical issues at Kinross and other U.P. prisons.

U.P. Breaking News is not specifically blaming the cops. The fair-minded cops we talk to regularly – understand we are fighting for their right to have more cops in the wake of an out-of-control system in the U.P. The cops in Yooperland are expected to spend most of their time handling suicidal/mental health situations – all three people that police shot in the U.P. in the final months of 2016 had mental health and/or depression issues.

Plus cops are pressured to close cases – and we are beginning to wonder about why some strange rulings have been made – like a woman whose death was ruled a suicide in less than three days even though she was found with a bungee cord around her neck laying on a famous Upper Peninsula beach – and no suicide note.

U.P. Breaking News stated in a editorial – that the integrity of MSP detectives is now on the line – and even the public is losing faith. I am not so cynical to believe these cops are bad – but it appears problems include low-staffing, pressure to move on, etc. There must be other reasons contribute to the U.P. being the place where people can apparently get away with murder – unless the case is gift wrapped for police.

Plus some days no cops are put on the road by U.P. county sheriff’s departments – and worse. We’d reveal more but it would be a treasure map for crooks (not that they do not already know this). Plus I’d hate to think our huge unsolved murder stats will encourage potential murderers into thinking getting away with the heinous crime is likely in the U.P.

If you are a fair-minded cop who understands and really cares about the future of the U.P. – and why we seem to be upending on many fronts. Rather than being reactionary – police officers please read this – even offer an opinion because we really want to know why this is happening. You do not have to give your name.

Am I the only one who thinks this is not sustainable?

We really want to know why police think this is happening. If this is not addressed – like a cancer – the public will begin the question the credibility of even U.P. law enforcement – where we love and believe in our police.

Please. If you are a professional law enforcement officer who recognizes the problems – and you do not easily get mad or your butt on your shoulders – then please tell us the possible solutions and how you think they can be achieved.
Or is all hunky dory from U.P. cops point of view?

Don’t worry we will hide your identity like our dozens and dozens of other sources – for whom we are very thankful. Some just want to blame media – we can take it. But that doesn’t solve anything.

*** Remember we NEED input from police and corrections officers who care instead of the usual sophomoric blaming of us. Remember, if you won’t help with information do not complain if we do not report it.

Over three dozen wanted sex offenders on loose in U.P.: Plus the U.P. has had a strip joint for years nobody talks about – and the sex offender case that turned into a super secretive extortion case in Marquette – and no one is talking but our sources

Over three dozen sex offenders are on the lamb in the Upper Peninsula and listed as non-compliant by the sex offender registry

Dirty Sex U.P. Style: Even the super secret and icky Marquette extortion case involves a sex offender from a law enforcement family who were victims of alleged extortion – and at least $10,000 in money allegedly extorted by the suspect who is also the sex assault victim’s mom – a case officials have kept very quiet

The search for over three dozens sex offenders whose last known addresses indicate they are wandering the Upper Peninsula of Michigan without totally paying for their crime and warning others.

Below is a list of cities checked by U.P. Breaking News and the number listed are of non-compliant sex offenders.

kathryn-white-extortion-1Even the super secretive Marquette felony extortion case is connected to sex offender.

But in that case – its the mother of the alleged victim who is in trouble.

Sources say the sex offender involved went to prison and is a member of a well-liked law enforcement family. Sources tell U.P. Breaking News that the case is – well “icky.”
The sources say the suspect tried to allegedly extort some $10,000 in money frm the sex offender. The extortion suspect is also reportedly the sex assault victim’s mom

No one will release information on the highly unusual case

Sex has also become a business in the U.P. – and everyone knows about the strip club south of Gwinn. Then there are the hush-hush red-light businesses you can find right across the state line. There are even online ads that claim U.P. college students are involved in the sex trade.

Every community in the U.P. seems to have from one to to dozens of sex offenders living peacefully in their community.

Non-compliant U.P. sex offender arrested Saturday

But the ones that go rogue – just like the guy nabbed Saturday in Chippewa County.

It was that arrest that made us check the sex offender registry records – and its very easy to use.

With over three dozen non-compliant sex offenders in the U.P. – it has law enforcement concerned and constantly seeking tips on the whereabouts of a non-compliant offender.

But considering there are over 5,000 non-compliant sex offenders in Michigan – the U.P. still appears pretty safe.

However every week U.P. Breaking News hears reports about rapes, incest and all forms of sexual assault – most of which goes unreported unless some official puts out a press release.

Already proof of poverty and hunger issues to come in Marquette, MI and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

By Greg Peterson
U.P. Breaking News

(Marquette, MI) – Three incidents of hunger and cold over the past two days in Marquette, MI shows the gales of winter’s poverty and homelessness have come early as the Upper Peninsula.

In fact, the U.P., itself is barely coming to grip with the extent of the growing poverty and a hunger crisis – and if there is any substance abuse issues involving the hungry – all rules seem to get thrown out the window.

State budget cuts and high unemployment ate taking their toll.

The Marquette, Michigan Poverty Incidents Fri., Oct. 28, 2016 and today Sat., Oct. 29, 2016 (so far):

  • A short while ago on this cold Saturday morning a man was begging for food money for his hungry child on Bike Path – possible name is Steve Mert (sp? – we would like to talk to him).

  • Friday – Police called to local restaurant because hungry people were “dumpster diving”

  • Friday – twice on Friday police called to an exclusive neighborhood in north Marquette where a male and a 15-year-old female show up asking to be let inside because they are cold and hungry – they claimed to be neighbors but man who called police did not recognize them.

The Warming Center and the faith-based Room at the Inn Project do what they can – with almost no money. They are forced to weed out – send packing or arrested – all those who have been drinking or doing drugs. Police do not have the jail space to lock away the problem – nor should they be expected.

The problem is likely to get worse as the snow blankets the U.P.

Out of real fear, should people not help those who arrive at their door seeking help?

What would Jesus or any of the faith leaders do?
