Suicides in U.P. continued this afternoon as tragically another Yooper takes his life – Lots of unreported U.P. suicides hidden from media – Public oblivious: Another recent NMU student suicide? – Marquette County school sports team suicide pact? – and it happened again today

U.P. Breaking News Ongoing Suicide Advisory – another today – 3-28-18 4:50 p.m. ET –

Another Yooper takes his life with a rope – as U.P. suicide epidemic continues with a more than weekly rate – Doesn’t count attempted suicides

U.P. lawmakers please help – as the U.P. averaging more than one suicide per week in recent months.
Even now this moment, U.P. police are handing a hanging of a 33-year-old man. Purposely not saying location-please do not say it if you know.

Unless we have it on tape from cops, there is no way to confirm any suicides in U.P. as police are afraid to speak publicly about it and media does their obligatory and vague once a year story.

I believed for 40 years that media should not report suicides – but that tactic has not worked – it has failed miserably.

The thought was reporting suicides increases suicides – well without the reporting – the U.P. suicide rate has tripled or more.

The U.P. weekly suicide rate is fat, far beyond – way, way out of control!

Since we reported the recent hanging of a 21-year-old male student at NMU – we heard there was yet another suicide of female NMU student.

Plus have gotten unconfirmed reports that some male members of a school sports team in Marquette County – had a suicide pact but a mom found out and stopped it.

We are not (yet) saying team at this point – and if I call and ask school officials they run away like track stars. No one wants to deal with this.

Or is it better to ignore it, not try to fix underfunded and broken system, and pretend our crushing poverty rate and addictive drug crisis is not happening. Also -we need to stop stigmatizing depression. People who feel depressed should be loved and helped – not shunned and bad-mouthed by judgmental Yoopers.

One start would be to throw our past three governors in prison for not protecting our communities – dereliction of duty.

Restore funding at levels that assures follow-up care happens always and a lot.

The old U.P. treat me like a mushroom comfort because nothing ever happens in mushroom world.

Fund me, fund you – who are you giving to?: Three Schoolcraft County drug suspects have GoFundMe pages including two created since their arrest last month – and one of those is a man already convicted of causing two deaths while drunk and committing burglary

U. P. Breaking News Bulletin – 3-7-18 – 6:14 a.m. ET –

Always check the background of people who set up GoFundMe pages – good things sometimes used by the not so good – Manistique drug suspects have GoFundMe pages including man who was convicted of two counts of negligent homicide for drunk driving double fatal crash, plus burglary and drugs

(Manistique, MI) – GoFundMe is a website that helps many with legitimate concerns – but U.P. Breaking News has noticed that increasingly some of the Yoopers begging for money are alleged druggies and convicted criminals.

Two Schoolcraft County men facing serious drug charges have set up GoFundMe pages.

One of those questionable GoFundMe pages has been set up by a man convicted of two counts of negligent homicide in 2007, burglary in 2002, plus peddling meth analogues in 2014 – and most recently charged with sale of Suboxone and being habitual offender.
U.P. Breaking News is seeking your help for information on the two deaths that Henry committed during a drunk driving wreck in July 2006.

A drunken Shane Henry crashed his vehicle into another near Manistique on July 6, 2006 – two people were killed – reportedly including well-known business woman and her granddaughter.

Henry was convicted in 2007.

U.P. Breaking News has not found anything online about the crash involving drunken driving – even though it was only 10 years ago.

However here are some stats that include Schoolcraft County 2006 fatal wrecks – and alcohol-related crashes.

2006 alcohol-related crashes in Michigan by county
2007 Michigan Fatal Crash report for 2006 including Schoolcraft County and all U.P. counties in 2006

If you have any information on the victims please contact us. We have partial names.

43-year-old Shane David Henry of Manistique was among five Schoolcraft County residents busted in February on drugs charges.
Henry is charged with delivery/manufacture of the controlled substance Suboxone (seven-year felony) and charged as a fourth-offense habitual offender.

43-year-old Shane David Henry of Manistique, MI

43-year-old Shane David Henry of Manistique, MI

In Sept. 2014, Henry, then 39 years old, was charged with manufacturing more than 100 marijuana plants and operating a drug house, was allowed to plead guilty to possession of an analog drug and sentenced to 1 to 2 years in prison.
Henry and a co-defendant were arrested by Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team in June 2014.

In fact, not only has he set up a GoFundMe page since his most recent arrest, Henry uses a photo of he and his child to apparently invoke sympathy. Henry is seeking $1,000 because he is a “disabled single father struggling to pay bills (and) make ends meet.”

27-year-old Dimitri Mishko is charged with delivery/manufacture of Suboxone (7-year felony).
Mishko has also set up a GoFundMe page with a strange photo of a man in a gas mask coming up from underground.
Set up since his arrest, Mishko claims the effort to raise $1,5000 is for “help for my parents in covering my legal fees and medical expenses.”

While the other suspects were arrested in February, Gwaltney was arrested on Nov. 11, 2017 after an undercover buy and bust operation conducted by the Manistique Department of Public Safety and the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department.

Gwaltney set up a GoFundMe page about two years before her arrest – seeking money because of her baby boy Jonathon, whom she wrote has a condition (Syndactyly) that caused some of his fingers and toes to be webbed. Gwaltney still has just over $200 needed to reach the goal of $1,000.

(Manistique, MI) – Federal prosecutors in Marquette have filed felony charges against a postal employee in Schoolcraft County accusing her of stealing money and packages from the mail for nine months during 2017.

58-year-old Patricia Ann Sherman of Manistique, MI is charged in a felony “information” with theft of mail matter by postal service employee.
Sherman also has a past address listed in Houghton and Detroit, MI, and Moscow, Idaho.

The charges state Sherman alleged “stole money and articles contained in envelopes and packages, which had come into her possession, and which were intended to be conveyed by mail.”

Sherman allegedly stole male and packages between January and Oct.4, 2017, the federal information states. A federal “felony information” is a charging tool used by prosecutors rather than an immediate indictment.

If convicted, Sherman faces up to five years in federal prison, up to three years supervised release, and up to $250,000 in fines/costs/restitution.

The federal prosecutor in the case is Assistant U.S. Attorney Maarten Vermaat in Marquette and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Byerly Birge. The case is assigned to U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney.

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – “Visibility is very, very poor at this time,” radioed an official in Alger County at 8 p.m. ET.

That sums up conditions in many areas of the U.P. tonight that has claimed at least one life and caused closures like – M-28 between Harvey and Munising, and the Mackinac Bridge. Winds whipped an early morning house fire and caused a “rekindle” on Maple Street in the Soo earlier today.

Sadly, the Upper Peninsula snowmobile death toll continues to climb with the latest caused in part because of the deadly weather conditions that exist in some areas of the U.P.

With nightfall, the wind-chills are in the double digits below zero.

The latest snowmobile fatality occurred today in Chippewa County – and today dozens of U.P. crashes due to weather include a pickup truck that rear-ended a semi tractor trailer truck in Raco, MI. (Read press release – and they will be sending a photo).

Meanwhile as we write this story (7:25 p.m.) word of a snowmobile accident with injuries – this time in Alger County (scroll down to see what we know, plus we will add updates later if needed to the top of page).

Chippewa County Sheriff Michael D. Bitnar has issued a special warning about the weather – and so has the national weather service.

The latest victim is 49-year-old Kristen Dale Brown of Portland, MI who died today on Snowmobile Trail Number 8 near the Brimley Grade Road. The victim was traveling faster than trail conditions allowed – and was thrown from his machine into the middle of the trail.

Due to white-out conditions, a second snowmobiler did not see the Brown and “ran into the victim” who was lying on the trail, Sheriff Bitnar says.
The conditions at the time were “blowing snow and snow dust.”

It’s not clear if the two snowmobilers were traveling together in a group.
The “second snowmobiler was unable to see the fallen snowmobiler lying in the trail,” Sheriff Bitnar said.
Assisting the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department at the snowmobile fatality were the Bay Mills Police Department, Bay Mills Conservation Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Bay Mills and Superior Fire and EMS.

Now Alger County – Cell phone calls from the scene were dropping off while calling 911 – and different locations were given.

The confusion because one dropped call mentioned the bringing a victim out to the casino in Christmas, MI.
Meanwhile there is a snowmobile accident on the trail near the Seney Township and Burt Township line.

The Burt Township Volunteer Fire Department, Alger EMS, and law enforcement responding.

Reports said victim is on the “Adams trail” suffering a possible broken leg or hip. He cannot be moved by other snowmobilers.
Staging location is Twin Lakes Road, but just changed because a  rescue vehicle track-vehicle break down on scene.

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – You don’t often hear the police call for firefighters at the cop HQ or 911 – but it happened twice almost simultaneously this morning in the U.P. of Michigan.

Marquette firefighters are on the scene of an apparent electrical fire at the Marquette Police Headquarters.

Meanwhile – same thing was just reported at the Enhanced 911 Dickinson County Dispatch Center – located in the county building in Iron Mountain, MI.

A dispatcher in Iron Mountain said their entire system went down. Dickinson County 911 was filled with smoke – plus electronics are fried from computers to LEIN.

Marquette PD reported its problem about two minutes before Iron Mountain PD but could have been simultaneously.

Are they related due to timing and/or weather. If they are not related to either – then its a coincidence involving lotto type odds.

“The fire department is headed your way,” said a 911 dispatcher to a police official at the Marquette Police Headquarters.

The problem is “smoke coming out of their main frame computer room,” a dispatcher told firefighters in Marquette.

Not clear if its weather-related. No injuries reported.

Only two days ago firefighters rushed to a U.P. hospital hecause of an active electrical fire.

Iron Mountain firefighters were called Saturday night to the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
An “active electrical fire” was found in the rear of the hospital. No Injuries reported.

Meanwhile – the raging snowstorm has made driving inadvisable through at least tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. The storm has already caused several rollovers/accidents. Plus power outages reported in some areas.

(Marquette, MI) – Two snowmobilers were rushed to the trauma center in Marquette, MI late today after separate crashes in Baraga and Keweenaw counties – and one sledder was in critical condition.

The worst crash was reported tonight in Keweenaw County.

An out-of-state woman was critically injured when she lost control of her sled in a curve and crashed into trees. The snowmobile received relatively light damage, however the sledder received multiple trauma-related injuries.

The crash happened on snowmobile Trail Number 134 near Madan Location.

The 28-year-old female victim was rushed to Aspirus-Keweenaw Hospital, and transferred a short while ago to U.P. Health System-Marquette suffering from multiple critical trauma-related injuries – and troubling vitals.

Those officials assisting on the scene included the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s department, Ahmeek Search and Rescue and Peninsula Auto Repair Towing and Recovery.

The crash is a tragic example of how a sledder can receive horrible injuries – and the snowmobile itself is barely scratched. female victim has “major trauma, multiple injuries.”

Meanwhile in Baraga County:

A rescue lasting almost two hours occurred in Baraga County this afternoon to get an injured snowmobiler off the trail.

The snowmobile crash was dispatched at 2:12 p.m. this afternoon, Wed., Jan. 17, 2018. The Bay Ambulance Service paramedics transported the victim to the Baraga hospital – and some EMS officials reportedly used snowmobiles to get on the trail.

The crash was reported on snowmobile Trail Number 15 near 14488 Arnheim Road near Pelkie, MI in Baraga Township.

While transporting the victim to U.P. Health System-Marquette, paramedics told doctors via radio that the victim suffered a shoulder fracture and a dislocated right ankle. All painful but not life-threatening injuries.

A WARNING TO ALL SNOWMOBILERS:

Despite recent heavy snow, U.P. trail conditions change rapidly – most wrecks involve curves, hitting trees, unfamiliarity with what’s coming up on the trail – and high speeds.
Slow down – and Live. Or face death or a life-changing painful injury

There have been five snowmobile fatalities in the past month across the Upper Peninsula. The latest victim – a 51-year-old Saginaw, MI man, was killed yesterday Tues., Jan. 16, 2018 in Chippewa County when he lost control in a curve and hit a tree in the eastern U.P. just south of famed White Fish Point.
