(Skanee, MI) – A man, woman and their dog are safe, however a rescuer has been injured, in a dramatic ice rescue on Huron Bay after their vehicle fell through the ice in Skanee, MI.

67-year-old Clyde Francis Selden, Jr. of Skanee, MI and 59-year-old Silvia Froschin of Baraga, MI were hauling a trailer with fishing equipment. Both are Baraga County residents with more addresses in L’Anse and Baraga.

The submerged vehicle was about a half a mile offshore from Witz’s Marina & Campsite that’s located 16 miles northeast of L’Anse, MI in small town of Skanee, MI.

The first word came in sounded ominous “vehicle through the ice with two souls” on board. Then both victims made it to the roof of their vehicle, which was reportedly a Geo Tracker, with a 4-by-6 trailer with lots of fishing equipment. Initial reports indicated the vehicle was pulling a snowmobile trailer, but there were no snowmobiles involved.

One of the victim then got back onto the ice. A snowmobile and a 4-by-4 went to the scene as other  emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. Then word – both were safe and being brought to shore along with their dog – and a hurt rescuer.

huron islandsWitz MarinaHuron Bay Ice rescue 1

Responding rescuers likely got a lump in their throat when the terrible info came that one of theirs was hurt. One rescuer on the scene may have broken her hip during the event. The victims were all wet and extremely cold but did not sustain life-threatening injuries although broken hips can be extremely painful with a long recovery.

Among those responding to the incident were Michigan State Police, Baraga County Sheriff’s Department, Arvon Township Volunteer Fire Department, Baraga Fire Department, and the L’Anse Fire Department.

The U.S. Coast Guard launched a chopper – however it was not needed as the rescue happened quickly once the emergency personnel reached the scene.

Bays on Lake Superior are particularly dangerous for unstable ice – as four snowmobilers were lucky not to died when their sleds recently went through the ice on Munising Bay. Shifting currents, winds and warmer temps can make ice travel treacherous. Walking today is even bad due to ice left from melting snow.

(Marquette, MI) – Two snowmobilers were rushed to the trauma center in Marquette, MI late today after separate crashes in Baraga and Keweenaw counties – and one sledder was in critical condition.

The worst crash was reported tonight in Keweenaw County.

An out-of-state woman was critically injured when she lost control of her sled in a curve and crashed into trees. The snowmobile received relatively light damage, however the sledder received multiple trauma-related injuries.

The crash happened on snowmobile Trail Number 134 near Madan Location.

The 28-year-old female victim was rushed to Aspirus-Keweenaw Hospital, and transferred a short while ago to U.P. Health System-Marquette suffering from multiple critical trauma-related injuries – and troubling vitals.

Those officials assisting on the scene included the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s department, Ahmeek Search and Rescue and Peninsula Auto Repair Towing and Recovery.

The crash is a tragic example of how a sledder can receive horrible injuries – and the snowmobile itself is barely scratched. female victim has “major trauma, multiple injuries.”

Meanwhile in Baraga County:

A rescue lasting almost two hours occurred in Baraga County this afternoon to get an injured snowmobiler off the trail.

The snowmobile crash was dispatched at 2:12 p.m. this afternoon, Wed., Jan. 17, 2018. The Bay Ambulance Service paramedics transported the victim to the Baraga hospital – and some EMS officials reportedly used snowmobiles to get on the trail.

The crash was reported on snowmobile Trail Number 15 near 14488 Arnheim Road near Pelkie, MI in Baraga Township.

While transporting the victim to U.P. Health System-Marquette, paramedics told doctors via radio that the victim suffered a shoulder fracture and a dislocated right ankle. All painful but not life-threatening injuries.

A WARNING TO ALL SNOWMOBILERS:

Despite recent heavy snow, U.P. trail conditions change rapidly – most wrecks involve curves, hitting trees, unfamiliarity with what’s coming up on the trail – and high speeds.
Slow down – and Live. Or face death or a life-changing painful injury

There have been five snowmobile fatalities in the past month across the Upper Peninsula. The latest victim – a 51-year-old Saginaw, MI man, was killed yesterday Tues., Jan. 16, 2018 in Chippewa County when he lost control in a curve and hit a tree in the eastern U.P. just south of famed White Fish Point.

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – It was a violent and drug-fueled week across northern Michigan – as jail records show than a dozen U.P. residents were arrested on serious charges in Marquette and Delta Counties alone.

“Investigating Officer:” Upper Peninsula officer about to be charged by feds – Baraga County Case

**Editor’s Note: If you have any information on the “investigating officer” inthis story and/or what agency he did/or does represent – Marshall Thomas – please call or contact U.P. Breaking News

(Marquette, MI) – Shocking paperwork was filed in federal court in Marquette today that indicates an “investigating officer” in the U.P. is about to be charged with a felony crime by federal prosecutors.

In fact, the federal paperwork already describes the officer s a defendant – although no formal charges have been released publicly.

41-year-old Marshall Dion Thomas of L’Anse, Michigan appears to be the target of a federal investigation. U.P. Breaking News is compiling information on other possible targets of the case.

In a rare move today, Wed., Nov. 15, 2017, the U.S. Public Defenders Office today officially requested to no longer represent Thomas “in a pre-charged” federal criminal case. Thomas has listed past addresses in Pelkie, MI; Cincinnati, OH; and Williston, ND, according to several websites.

In asking to no longer represent Thomas, the top federal court-appointed defense attorney in northern Michigan filed a motion to allow Assistant Federal Public Defender Elizabeth A. LaCosse to withdraw from the case. The motion is not being opposed by federal prosecutors.

Today, Asst. U.S,. Attorney Maarten Vermaat filed paperwork with the court to confirm his office has no opposition to the federal public defenders office pulling from the criminal case. U.P. Breaking News first learned of the case last week but have been unable to confirm the nature of the pending criminal charges.

Public defender LaCosse “was recently appointed to represent Mr. Thomas’ interests in a pre-charged matter,” the motion to withdraw as defense attorney states. U.. Magistrate Judge Timothy P. Greeley has been hearing arguments in the matter.

It was filed on behalf of LaCosse by Sharon A. Turek – the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Michigan – that encompasses all of the U.P. and half of the lower Peninsula.
“Since being appointed, counsel’s only contact with Mr. Thomas has been a meeting
to discuss the issue of her office’s conflict in representing him,” the motion states. “An attorney/client relationship has not been established.”

“Because Mr. Thomas is an investigating officer in a case where Ms. LaCosse is
appointed as counsel, she has good reason to believe that a conflict of interest exists in her continuing representation of Mr. Thomas and that it would be in his best interest for a substitute attorney to be appointed to represent his interests in this matter.”
“Assistant Federal Public Defender Elizabeth A. LaCosse, respectfully
requests that this Honorable Court enter an order granting her permission to withdraw as counsel in this matter and appoint substitute counsel from the CJA Panel in Grand Rapids for the Defendant.”

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – An accident that heavily damaged three vehicles in Negaunee was one of this morning’s accidents across northern Michigan as treacherous roads are expected from a storm that is walloping the Upper Peninsula.

Look out for blowing snow, snow heavy at times and freezing rain in some areas – see the list of warnings after this story

About a dozen motor vehicle rollovers have been reported since Saturday across the U.P. plus numerous snowmobile accidents and even a burned sled.

Only minor injuries were reported in the wreck that happened at abut 7:30 this morning at U.S.-41 and Baldwin Avenue in Negaunee, MI causing airbags t0o deploy – often resulting in a painful chest bruising – as airbags save your life (I know) but can cause also neck and spinal injuries.

The wreck caused a major morning commute traffic jam as did other accidents in Ishpeming and on M-94 in Marquette County and on the famous but slippery Quincy Hill in Hancock, MI in the Copper Country where cars were sliding this morning and a semi tractor trailer truck jackknifed.

There have been numerous snowmobile accidents across the U.P. in past three days including one in Alger County on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017 that sent a man to Marquette General Hospital with a broken armed and other injuries. The victim crashed his sled reportedly traveling about 55 to 60 miles per hour and hit a bad spot on the trail throwing the victim. His injuries were serious but not life-threatening.

Meanwhile, trail groomers in the Copper Country this morning are reporting a snowmobile burned to a crisp and the sled skeleton was left along the trail.

It’s not clear what trail the burned sled is on but Keweenaw-Houghton County trail system

“There is nothing left,” said one groomer this morning. “Looks like a rental.”

Blinding snow caused numerous accidents on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017 after the snowmobile races in the Soo area. Chippewa County law enforcement was kept busy by at least two snowmobile accidents and other wrecks – including a woman who rolled her sled on top of her – and was taken to War Memorial Hospital with painful injuries including possible seriously broken bones

It was one of several accidents that occurred in whiteout conditions in the eastern U.P. on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017. Another involved a man who was taken to the hospital after his vehicle flipped several times in Chippewa County during the storm.

The blinding whiteout conditions were in so bad that police had to drive a woman and her children back to Sault Ste. Maire, MI after the driver had a panic attack and did the smart ting – pulled over and called for help.

Several groomers in the Houghton/Keweenaw trail system reported that it was mainly rental sleds on Monday describing as all looking the same.

This weekend, near Boot Jack an accident involving a snowmobile trailer caused a mess but no serious injuries. Not clear if the sled inside the trailer were also destroyed.

Meanwhile early yesterday morning (Mon., Jan. 6, 2017) ) a 54-year-old Escanaba women was transferred to a Marquette MI hospital after being seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash near the Highland Golf Club and railroad tracks on U.S.-2 in Ford River Township – that saw her SUV flip into numerous trees.

The Jaws of Life was used to extricate the woman and she was later transferred to U.P. Heath System in Marquette with numerous serious injuries. Police say the woman was eastbound when her SUV crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by a 21-year-old Bark River Man – who was fortunate to escape with only minor injuries.

The accident at about 11 p.m. Sunday night caused a major traffic jam. While authorities were extricating the victim – another rollover accident was reported nearby on one of the side streets. No one was found in that vehicle.
