Deadly crash on snowmobile Trail 8 in the Soo

(Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan) – A snowmobile vs a track vehicle have crashed and burst into flames in Sault Ste. Marie, MI – and seriously injured at least two people.
Two people have been taken to the hospital with very serious burns.
It appears there is a fatality involved. Police have called for a body bag to be brought to the scene, so it is unclear if there is a third victim.

There were conflicting reports from the tracked vehicle hitting a deer, to a groomer – we are reporting what was said. Most dispatches said there was a snowmobile involved – and all mentioned the tracked vehicle – Until a press release we will not know the details

Several dispatches described the tracked vehicle as a Gator – and another a similar vehicle called a Ranger.


The crash was reported about 10:40 a.m. ET this morning, Mon. Feb. 26, 2018,
The Michigan State Police Fire Marshall and an Accident Investigator have been called. A formal investigation will be conducted.
The crash is on Trail 8 – three quarters of a mile west of the trail head in the neighborhood of 20th Avenue.

A section of Snowmobile Trail 8 was closed About 11:10 a.m. and will likely be closed for a while – its between 5 Mile Road and the trail head (20th Street area) within the city limits of Sault Ste. Marie.

One dispatch indicated a snowmobile hit a Gator on tracks and another said a snowmobile was on fire. The tracked vehicle was also described by emergency officials on the scene as a Ranger – a similar tracked vehicle.
Numerous law enforcement agencies have responding including the Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, Soo Fire and Ambulance, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, and the U.S. Border Patrol.
One victim with “multiple serious burns” was rushed back to the trail head – and taken by Soo EMS to War Memorial Hospital.
A “second patient” was rushed to the hospital after leaving the a scene about 11:10 a.m. with critical injuries.
The area is being sealed off.

The victims may be transferred to a downstate burn center.
One or more of the machines are “engulfed in flames,” said an officer on the scene, adding there is 20-pound propane tank and gas can in the back of one of the burning machines.
One report indicated a trail groomer was involved, though not confirmed. Police also requested the AMWAY Complex in Ada, MI -but it is not known why.

Meanwhile a short time later, Calumet Township, MI firefighters were called to Snowmobile Trail 3 for a snowmobile fire – about a quarter mile down the trail. The sled was totaled.
