(Iron Mountain, MI) – Dickinson County has had its heart torn out several times this winter during a period of just under seven weeks by three fatal traffic crashes and a deadly fire that have taken many young lives, destroyed countless others, and left wounds that will take generations to heal.

Built on the lumber, paper and mining industries – Dickinson County is as tough as they come – even globally famous Kingsford Charcoal was first made in Kingsford, MI.

Then there’s the indisputably the toughest of U.P. underground miners Big John in Iron Mountain. My Grandparents called him Big Bad John (like the dramatic Jimmy Dean song in Sept. 1961) and it was a must-see every time we visited the U.P.

Carried on the backs of iron ore miners and lumberjacks, this rugged county is trying to recover its footing after four winter tragedies during a terrible just under seven-week period that killed five young people between the ages of 17 and 22. Now word about the possible imprisonment of another Iron Mountain resident for causing his friend’s death.

One crash in late December 2017 took the lives of two Norway, MI girls – and then last month there were two fatal wrecks in Marquette County that claimed the lives of three other Dickinson County youths. Plus a fire in Marquette, MI killed an Iron Mountain youth, her boyfriend and unborn child.

One tragedy was an alleged drunken driving wreck that now has a young Iron Mountain man charged with killing his friend. 21-year-old Austin Keith Mitchell of Iron Mountain was arrested this week

Its one of those tragedies that is too often played out in America – two old friends from high school are out having fun – and yes drinking – before the night is over one is killed, the other jailed for his friend’s death.

While portrayed in the media and by police as just a Marquette County incident, the accident on County Road 550 has hit Dickinson County the hardest.
Friends from sports and high school in general.

Sat. Dec. 30, 2017: Two Kingsford, MI teens died in a  head-on crash in Sagola Township that injures five members of a Marquette County family

Two Kingsford teens were killed instantly and three other people were seriously injured in a tragic year-end head-on collision on M-95 in Sagola Township near the Dickinson County/Marquette County.

18-year-old Taylor Nicole Bosley and 17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml, both of Kingsford, MI, died on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017.
The teens were traveling to watch a Flivvers hockey game.

The wreck also seriously injured a family of five from Marquette County. All of whom survived.

17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml of Kingsford, MI

17-year-old Jolene Kim Treml of Kingsford, MI

Trembl was adopted from Seoul, South Korea – and was loved dearly her extended family and friends in Kingsford.Jolene Kim Treml, 17, of Breitung Township, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017.
She was born January 5, 2000, in Seoul, South Korea and was adopted by her parents, Jeffrey and Mary (McNamara) Treml. Jolene was a senior at Kingsford High School with her studies focused on nursing.

She was involved in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) and had been accepted to NWTC to pursue her nursing degree next year. In addition to her studies, Jolene worked as a Dietary Aide at Freeman Nursing & Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

She was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church where she was an altar server and participated in the youth group. Jolene had the best sense of humor, always having a smile on her face and putting one on everyone else’s. She had a passion for shopping and clothing, especially her “ripped jeans.”

Jolene had a closet full of clothes but always managed to “steal” something out of her friends’ or sister’s closets. Some days she had three outfit changes before she was out the door! She had a real eye for fashion. Jolene was that person who was there in the middle of the night to listen to friends or family and was always there to help if needed.

Some of her most joyous moments were spent with her nephews, Nolan and Beau. She soaked up every minute loving her boys, and they adored their Auntie JoJo. She will be sadly missed by everyone who knew her.

According to Bosley’s obituary – she was your typical U.P. teenage girl:

Bosley received a scholarship to St. Norbert College. Bosley was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. She really enjoyed listening to music, playing the piano, swimming and was a talented artist – and enjoyed watching stock car races and following KHS sports, especially hockey.

Favorite pastimes included hanging out with family and friends plus using social media.
“Most of all, Taylor loved time spent with family and her cousins held a special place in her heart. “

Douglas Charles Hawes

51-year-old Douglas Charles Hawes of Saginaw, MI

Hawes was riding his sled on Snowmobile Trail #8 (between M-123, Curley Lewis Highway) during the noon hour on that Tuesday in Chippewa County.

Hawes missed a curve and struck a tree traveling very fast. Speed and unfamiliarity of snowmobile trails (surprise curves) is a big factor in many of the deaths. Tremendous speeds that kill instantly. Hawes apparently did not see the curve until it was too late. Hawes and his sled then slammed into trees.

Hawes was married and leaves behind a wife and daughter.

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – You don’t often hear the police call for firefighters at the cop HQ or 911 – but it happened twice almost simultaneously this morning in the U.P. of Michigan.

Marquette firefighters are on the scene of an apparent electrical fire at the Marquette Police Headquarters.

Meanwhile – same thing was just reported at the Enhanced 911 Dickinson County Dispatch Center – located in the county building in Iron Mountain, MI.

A dispatcher in Iron Mountain said their entire system went down. Dickinson County 911 was filled with smoke – plus electronics are fried from computers to LEIN.

Marquette PD reported its problem about two minutes before Iron Mountain PD but could have been simultaneously.

Are they related due to timing and/or weather. If they are not related to either – then its a coincidence involving lotto type odds.

“The fire department is headed your way,” said a 911 dispatcher to a police official at the Marquette Police Headquarters.

The problem is “smoke coming out of their main frame computer room,” a dispatcher told firefighters in Marquette.

Not clear if its weather-related. No injuries reported.

Only two days ago firefighters rushed to a U.P. hospital hecause of an active electrical fire.

Iron Mountain firefighters were called Saturday night to the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.
An “active electrical fire” was found in the rear of the hospital. No Injuries reported.

Meanwhile – the raging snowstorm has made driving inadvisable through at least tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon. The storm has already caused several rollovers/accidents. Plus power outages reported in some areas.

Vicious strangling incident in Ishpeming – suspect wanted

Some arrests, some fugitives in weekend assaults across the Upper Peninsula – here are only as fraction of the incidents – A few minutes ago (Monday evening) we heard a woman hiding in her bathroom because of her angry, drunk boyfriend

(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – It was as if something was in the water, judging by the shear number of truly heinous assaults across the U.P. this weekend.

Here are only a few:

A man calls 911 early today saying he is running down the Northland Truck Trail with someone shooting at him , The trail is one of two ways to go on a dirt back-road between Dickinson County and Marquette County.
Outcome: We do not know, but lots of law enforcement was involved, can’t confirm possible arrest.

Man serious injured after being hit over the head with a guitar at his K.I. Sawyer home – girlfriend is suspect (arrest made).

Six-month-old baby in Chippewa County with a severely twist arm brought to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie (outcome we do not know, CPS and police investigating)

Two women were charged with home invasion – both from Escanaba area – but one of the assaults committed in Marquette County (see our other stories for names etc.)

A fraction of the other assaults included woman whose boyfriend threatened to cut her wrists, another man disabled his girlfriend’s car and kicked her, a drunk very disorderly at Bell Hospital, another intoxicated person threatening twice to start killing people and cops if the UPSET drug team would not help him.

Strangle suspect

Chloe surrender

Now to our wanted suspect in that strangling incident at about 7 a.m. Sunday that sent a 36-year-old woman to the hospital.

The victim reported “difficulty breathing” after the attempted strangulation in room #8 at the usually quiet Wonderland Motel in Ishpeming, MI. The victim was rushed to U.P. Health System – Bell. The suspect allegedly used a phone cord to strangle the victim.

Ishpeming ambulances now called U.P. Health System “west” (in Marquette paramedics called east) but the hospital is commonly known as Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.

The suspect is 22-year-old Chloe Jazmin Shumate – wanted for the Jan. 21, 2018 incident. Online records state she has lived in Ishpeming and Champion, MI.
Police called her “a person of interest” in the assault.

he fled the scene – and if you know the whereabouts of Chloe Shumate – it will be safer for all if she surrenders. Please Chloe surrender.

Tracking dogs from the Michigan State Police K-9 unit tried unsuccessfully to follow her scent for very far. The case is being handled by the Ishpeming Police Department – and who sent thanks to those who assisted – MSP K-9 unit, the Negaunee Police Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Wonderland Motel is located along U.S.-41 but its official address is on Palms Avenue in Ishpeming.

Its urgent you call Ishpeming Police or 911 if you have any info on Chloe. Chloe please surrender.

(Marquette, MI) – Two snowmobilers were rushed to the trauma center in Marquette, MI late today after separate crashes in Baraga and Keweenaw counties – and one sledder was in critical condition.

The worst crash was reported tonight in Keweenaw County.

An out-of-state woman was critically injured when she lost control of her sled in a curve and crashed into trees. The snowmobile received relatively light damage, however the sledder received multiple trauma-related injuries.

The crash happened on snowmobile Trail Number 134 near Madan Location.

The 28-year-old female victim was rushed to Aspirus-Keweenaw Hospital, and transferred a short while ago to U.P. Health System-Marquette suffering from multiple critical trauma-related injuries – and troubling vitals.

Those officials assisting on the scene included the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s department, Ahmeek Search and Rescue and Peninsula Auto Repair Towing and Recovery.

The crash is a tragic example of how a sledder can receive horrible injuries – and the snowmobile itself is barely scratched. female victim has “major trauma, multiple injuries.”

Meanwhile in Baraga County:

A rescue lasting almost two hours occurred in Baraga County this afternoon to get an injured snowmobiler off the trail.

The snowmobile crash was dispatched at 2:12 p.m. this afternoon, Wed., Jan. 17, 2018. The Bay Ambulance Service paramedics transported the victim to the Baraga hospital – and some EMS officials reportedly used snowmobiles to get on the trail.

The crash was reported on snowmobile Trail Number 15 near 14488 Arnheim Road near Pelkie, MI in Baraga Township.

While transporting the victim to U.P. Health System-Marquette, paramedics told doctors via radio that the victim suffered a shoulder fracture and a dislocated right ankle. All painful but not life-threatening injuries.

A WARNING TO ALL SNOWMOBILERS:

Despite recent heavy snow, U.P. trail conditions change rapidly – most wrecks involve curves, hitting trees, unfamiliarity with what’s coming up on the trail – and high speeds.
Slow down – and Live. Or face death or a life-changing painful injury

There have been five snowmobile fatalities in the past month across the Upper Peninsula. The latest victim – a 51-year-old Saginaw, MI man, was killed yesterday Tues., Jan. 16, 2018 in Chippewa County when he lost control in a curve and hit a tree in the eastern U.P. just south of famed White Fish Point.

Five killed in snowmobile accidents in a month

(Marquette, MI) – A convicted Dickinson County drug dealer and burglar has been charged in federal court at Marquette with illegal possession of handgun and ammo – in a lengthy saga involving several U.P. Counties and an Ishpeming gun dealer.

Kyle James Murray mug 1

29-year-old Kyle James Murray of Kingsford, MI is named in a felony criminal “information,” an initial charging tool used by federal prosecutors rather than an indictment. While court records show Murray having a Balsam St. address in Kingsford, his Facebook page states he is from Iron Mountain now living in Madison, WI.

Murray was paroled from Michigan state prison in July 2014 after serving five and one half years for two counts of controlled substance – delivery/manufacture of narcotics/cocaine during 2009 in Dickinson County, MI. Using others, Murray allegedly purchased a gun from Wilderness Sports in Ishpeming.

The case was cracked by lots of gumshoe work by Michigan State Police troopers, Dickinson County Sheriff’s department and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF)

Drug arrest 28-year-old Amber Jarvi, Ishpeming

28-year-old Amber Jarvi of Ishpeming, MI

Drug suspect Amber Jarvi of Ishpeming allegedly bought the weapon for Murray, whom one suspect called a Yooper “gun girl.

Jarvi told the ATF that she had test fired the weapon with her father and Murray in June 2017 at the Jarvi camp on a two-track road off Dishno Road – the Peshekee Grade road in the Michigamme area.

Murray is currently jailed at the Dickinson County Jail for felony resisting arrest and obstruction of a police officer. Murray pleaded guilty and was set to be sentenced today, Jan. 8, 2018 on that two-year felony.

During questioning by the ATF, Amber Jarvi “became emotionally unglued and starting screaming, crying and using profanity,” the federal complaint states.

Amber Jarvi was then arrested on an outstanding Marquette County Warrant after trying to leave the interview with the ATF.
Amber Jarvi, who is charged with numerous felonies including one charge involving a minor, has been the subject of a lengthy state and federal probe into alleged meth trafficking.

ATF agents also questioned Jarvi’s father, David Kestila of Ishpeming.
Others drug suspects mentioned as aiding in the case are 43-year-old Joshua Jay Mitchell of Kingsford and 35-year-old Bobby Jo Wagner of Vulcan, MI – who where both busted in the same Iron County hotel room – The Bigfoot Hideaway in Crystal Falls, MI. Troopers first made contact with the trio when someone called 911 to report a suspicious vehicle parked in the rear of the motel.

Bobby Jo Wagner mugshot 2

Bobby Jo Wagner

Wagner is in state prison after being sentenced in Oct. 2017 to 1-5 years for third-degree home invasion in Dickinson County. She pleaded no contest and was found guilty of the July 2015 burglary involving the theft of prescription drugs from a Vulcan, MI home. Wagner has been the subject of numerous U.P. news stories.

Murray was convicted in 2011 of two burglary-related felonies in Marinette County, Wisconsin including theft of movable property/special facts and burglary building/dwelling. Murray was convicted of burglaries in Dickinson and Iron County.

The weapon Murray allegedly possessed illegally is a Kel-Tech, Model P-11, 9 mm pistol – serial number ATR29 and 9 rounds of CCI 9 MM ammo.
A “mufti-convicted felon,” Murray allegedly “knowingly possessed a firearm and ammunition” despite his criminal convictions and prison time.

The allegations involved the time period June 23-30, 2017. The criminal complaint was sworn to by ATF Agent James Petschke before U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy P. Greeley on Jan. 5, 2018.

Other law enforcement who assisted in the case included ATF Agent Aaron Voogd. Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department Detective Lt. Derek Dixon and Michigan State Police Trooper Doug Weesner.
