And about 1 p.m., the Rock River Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a rescue near the Eben Ice Caves in Alger County, MI. Alger EMS was en-route.

The subzero temps made the rescue that much more vital.

A 48-year-old woman walking on the very slippery ice caves hiking trail and fell.

The woman said she apparently broke her knee and is unable to walk. Emergency officials have launched a rescue to carry the woman off the trail and to a hospital – likely U.P. Health System-Marquette.

“She is almost to the Eben Ice Caves on the hiking trail,” a dispatcher told firefighters, adding the victim is unable to get up or walk.

“We have seven firefighters here to carry her out,” said one rescue worker who arrived on the scene.

An EMT said they were stabilizing the knee and the firefighters are going to carry her out on a stretcher.

The length of the ice cave trail is about three-quarters of a mile. Other than the serious knee injury, the victim was reported doing okay.
