U.P. Breaking News Day of Reckoning: One day in 2016 that brought amazing joy, extreme sadness, pure terror and gratefulness for the humanity of others: Thanking people who helped me on the most joyous – most grief-filled – and most terrifying day of 2016

Bidding Adieu to overwhelming day: The day of all extreme emotions in 2016

I wrote this editorial about 7 months ago – and never printed it.

Some say its because its the day I lost my mom only a year after dad.

It was a one day marked by extreme joy (stepson’s wedding), extreme sadness (mom dies just after dad) – and sheer terror (losing an entire tire going 70 miles per hour on interstate) So I have not touched it since then:

U.P. Breaking News Editorial: A tire sheers lugs and shoots off my SUV doing 70 MPH on 1-94 on way to important family wedding; Thank you to Michigan Department of Transportation Emergency Road Response, Inc. Dangerous runaway tire goes bouncing down the highway – while we were on the way to a wedding

By Greg Peterson

News Director, Owner/Upper Peninsula Breaking News

Want to thank some emergency dispatch and Michigan Department of Transportation highway rescue workers, a wrecker operator and other folks near Ann Arbor who came to my aid after my entire tire flew off the vehicle on the way to me stepson’s wedding.

This was westbound 1-94 at Jackson Ave. between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti – one the way to a wedding ceremony for a close family member.

Thank you to the:

Robert and Lara Dendel Kumpula May 22, 2016 #2 Mom Donna Kumpula (2)
In the hour prior to this photo mom Donna Kumpula (right) was in a car that lost an entire tire on the interstate, and witnessed her first kid’s wedding. So if she looks concerned – it’s no wonder why.

Remember I was driving my longtime girlfriend to her first kid’s wedding – her oldest son – and she was dressed up and we were on our way to the wedding.

Then my tire flew off.

And I mean at 70 mph it went flying down the highway bouncing to high heaven causing the drivers to swerve in many vehicles including semi tractor- trailer trucks.

The tire was still fully inflated – and flew backwards – and very high.

Then came back toward us also bouncing and going fast – as -94 had a slight downward incline – and we were at a terrible place in a curve just past a bridge overpass and in between the two exits to that road under 1-94.

Happened about 1:30 p.m. on Sun., May 22, 2016 (5-22 -16) on westbound 1-94 (was going wrong way to make matters worse – should have been eastbound)

U.P. Breaking News Editorial and Update on “The Finlandia Seven” – as top ELCA bishop and Finlandia trustees hide: Their actions (inaction) will guarantee an NAACP Probe – and the calls for resignations will reach further up the food chain than the president’s office

Its sounds like when cops can’t get a witness – nobody is sayin’ nuttin’

Let’s get bottom line on “The Finlandia Seven,” Racism at the university, the inaction of leaders – plus “Dean Wormer” and his preemptive strike on black athletes

Am I being smited or smoted by my ELCA friends? Wasn’t me at the helm folks

By Greg Peterson
U.P. Breaking News Editorial and “The Finlandia Seven” Update
Owner, News Director – 1-906-273-2433

(Hancock, MI) – An NAACP probe of Finlandia University is definitely in the offing because the board of trustees and the faith university’s top bishop have remained quiet.

Let’s face it – for decades U.P. colleges and universities have been using blacks for their athletic prowess – and most African Americans in the U.P. are connected to “higher learning” sports programs or prisons.

That is 100-percent true – it can not be denied. Plus put aside an NAACP probe – would it lead to a NCAA probe or by someone who wants justice and can oversee sports at the U.P. colleges.

Humbly Present Da Finlandia Bosses Names

URGENT LEAKED WOW U.P. Breaking News Bulletin 12-21-16 10:10 p.m.
We got da list – da Bosses at Finlandia University thanks to a source – atonement is called for it seems.
Just as U.P. Breaking News thought the trustee list at Finlandia University was some kind of national secret – one of our many sources leaked the list. Spent a long time looking online for it. To all the trustees, please be by your phone or call me. Please.

finlandia-trustees-1

It’s not that the higher-learning folks have not tried to appeal to all people (weak effort by they tout it) – and few out-of-town college-bound kids really want to be in the U.P. during the winter. (Yes, I have even heard racial jokes connected to those facts).

For 15 years, I volunteered and did positive interfaith environmental protection efforts – using articles and videos. One of my biggest supporters was the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). But now they do not return calls. Maybe because they blame me for the antics of the Finlandia University President Phillip Johnson.

It was this president of Finlandia University has created a scandal after expelling a pile of black football players – five on a preemptive strike.

Johnson reminded me of the guy “Dean Vernon Wormer” in the John Belusi movie “Animal House.” The Finlandia Seven and others were apparently on some kind of “double-secret probation.”

Now – what called all this – those are the tough and murky questions

Some say rough basketball and racial slurs – by all sides – in the heat of a pick-up basketball game.

Remember – these were football players and baseball players in a basketball game – often called a “pick-up game”

Black and white players – heck all athletes – apparently know that sometimes the talk gets pretty rugged during a game. That’s what I have been told. Sometimes, apparently, things go a bit far. Some athletes called it “trash talking” (that’s being polite).
The anger led to an injured baseball player – not even the real target. I have heard conflicting stories on who did what – actual fighting – swinging but not connecting – and more.

**I have yet for anyone to tell me exactly what angered some the black athletes. Only it was the result of events during that basketball game. But something set them off.

Now, according to a source who is black, some of the black football players were troublemakers but at least three if not more were unfairly expelled by an ungrateful university and thrown into an arriving severe winter storm with only 50 bucks and one night in local motel.

“There is racism at Finlandia,” said our source.

Our source specifically defended three three athletes from Saginaw, MI – although one he said it was harder to defender one of the three. Still, the preemptive strike by “Dean Wormer” just don’t pass ye ole smell test.

Our source said some of the African American football players brutally attacked a white baseball player at an off campus party – who was not the intended target. Some may or may not have landed actual blows – and that’s conflicting for all the athletes involved. That brave baseball player received severe facial injuries as two other teammates were able to find safety in a vehicle.
“He sacrificed himself,” our source said – adding he was trying to be fair because he also knows for a fact lots of racial comments and racism exists at Finlandia.

This could have been handled in a professional way by acting and helping – instead of – not reacting and hiding. I mean don’t they teach that in “I’m gonna be a college president’ school.

Now, the ELCA top bishop has said she wants her church members – many of whom do no believe they are racist – to have a self introspection. Even if you think you are not racist – you may act like a racist either unintentionally – or intentionally.

Some U.P. folks just have met few blacks in the U.P.

U.P. Breaking News has heard from numerous people who claim that President Johnson lost the confidence of the most of the staff long before this racist incident – except for a hench-person or two. This because of Johnson’s abrasive unfair style – while always smiling to trustees and ELCA officials.

Now the rub. In addition to this, the university has remained mum by buying off local media who still not reporting the entitre4 story.

Also – where are the TRUSTEES? (send me link to their names please, send link do not say where) – update someone did leak the trustee list the you to all my sources.

And where is Bishop?

It’s OK to blame me for President Johnson’s actions – but I think we all know what would happen if the NAACP did an major investigation of Finlandia – or any of the U.P. institutions of high learning.

It’s time for Johnson to resign or be fired. Period. Then if there is an NAACP probe – evidence against others in top positions may be found.

Even though the U.P. Media has run from this like a cat in a bag – “The Finlandia Seven” Racism Scandal will not go away. We welcome photos or statements – or documents from anybody involved. Additional sources can also call me and I will protect their identity.

Wonder where the folks I mentioned are hiding.

(Marquette, Michigan) – Two teen boy runaways from Great Lakes Recovery are now said to be armed and dangerous as an Upper Peninsula broadcast has been issued to all law enforcement agencies.

The Negaunee teens allegedly stole a car Sunday night after escaping earlier in the day from Great Lakes Recovery and then reportedly trying to me up with a female juvenile. If you have any information on these two young white males in their early teens please call your nearest law enforcement agency.

Lock all vehicles and remain vigilant. If you spot any suspicious looking people – please call the police because the youths could now be anywhere in the U.P. including still in Marquette County or delta County.

The manhunt involves numerous police agencies including the Marquette Police Department, A K-9 Unit, Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and Negaunee Police Department.

The wanted teens may even have fled to the Deltas County area but were last spotted early today (Halloween 2016), Oct. 31, 2016 in the Marquette area.

For several hours early today police set up a perimeter around several exclusive Marquette neighborhoods on all sides of Shiras Hills off U.S.-41 south. This after a stolen car allegedly taken by the boys was recovered in the area. The stolen car is owned by Adam Karki of Negaunee. There were no injuries reported in the auto theft and police have found evidence allegedly linking the youths to the crime.

Police believe the suspects may now be armed with a handgun and shotgun ammo. One of the boys may be wearing a jacket that is said to be a referees jacket.

(Marquette, MI)  – A Halloween manhunt is underway this windy, cold and damp Monday morning in several exclusive Marquette, Michigan neighborhoods after a stolen vehicle was recovered by police and suspects were apparently spotted by witnesses.

A perimeter was been set up early today, Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 – around the Shiras Subdivision and as far west the Marquette Mountain area –  Granite Pointe Drive and Division St. Several subdivisions are being searched. Police were hoping to see up eyes in all areas where the suspects could escape the manhunt – and the weather is no help.

In fact, even the time of year wasn’t a big help as police reportedly had to check several Halloween displays including a very large artificial pumpkin.

The manhunt involves numerous police agencies including the Marquette Police Department, A K-9 Unit, Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and Negaunee Police Department.

The Negaunee Police Department is involved in the manhunt because the agency was already investigating the case of two teen runaway boys.

It had not been confirmed that the teen boys from Negaunee were involved in the auto theft case, but reportedly witnesses described two youths running from the area that may fit the descriptions of the youths.

One of boys was in shorts and the other an orange Hoodie.

U.P. Breaking News Editorial: Open message to Michigan State Police Detectives: If this reporter is found dead on a Saturday – Please don’t quickly believe I somehow managed kill myself and announce it four brief days later on a Wednesday – and definitely not if my death involves a bungy cord – Lansing’s Utopian Detached Detachments

U.P. Breaking News Editorial and Plea: I beg you!

Open Message to Michigan State Police Detectives:

Editorial by Greg Peterson
U.P. Breaking News

Please MSP Troopers or any cops – I beg of you.
If I am found dead on a beach – please don’t decide my life in four days.

In what might be the strangest and quickest death investigations every whipped out by Michigan State Police – the cops say they are sure it there was no foul play at Whitefish Point, Michigan.

aly-1

In near record time, Michigan State Police say 42-year-old Allyson Motlinski-Jenkins of downstate Maybee, Michigan – definitely was not a victim of foul play in Chippewa County.

Her body was discovered just this past Saturday (10-22-16) on a cold, wind-whipped Lake Superior beach at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point, MI.

U.P. Breaking News has done many editorials and stories about the skyrocketing suicide problem in the U.P. – and if her death is the latest stat in the U.P. epidemic of taking one’s own life. So be it. But not everyone buys it. One thing MSP detectives know for sure in four days – no reason to suspect foul play.

The suicide crisis also underlines the ongoing issue of under-funded northern Michigan mental health system – thanks to crooks like Gov. Snyder. When is that guy finally going to prison?

In 40 years of covering street news, this reporter has never heard of a bungee cord suicide on a beach – not to say it can’t happen. Who knows – MSP seem so sure of themselves – sure to say it was not foul play – whatever they say killed her. You see they have not released much – but one local TV stations says there are no suspects at large.

Hmmm – we can wait to hear what the public thinks – is it just me? Is it bungy cord suicide on a beach a real thing?

Well, MSP weren’t the only ones trying to convince people it was not foul play – some were yelling that it was a suicide from the start. We will leave it at that.

It bears saying one more time – if you ever find my body and I have choked – in anyway connected – or remotely connected to – a bungy cord – please do not be so quick to rule it wasn’t foul play. Or any kind of suicide.

**This is part of the U.P. Breaking News ongoing series to help reveal, highlight and hopefully combat domestic violence crimes against children, women and men across northern Michigan Indian Country in honor of our late friend and a leader to end tribal DV Tillie Back Bear – who brought her message to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan from the Rosebud Reservation

(Bay City, MI) – A northern Michigan federal grand jury has indicted a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan on charges that over the past three years he allegedly beat, abused, choked and in several other ways otherwise injured a young female child and is accused of allegedly abusing his girlfriend over a long period of time as an habitual offender – and a deadline has been set for a plea agreement.

norman-j-cyr-tribal-newspaper-photoIf convicted, Norman Joaquin Cyr could be sentenced to over a half century in prison and fined $2 million dollars. Federal charges were brought because Cyr has three previous family violence convictions in Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Court in March 2000, October 2002, and January 2005. Cyr remains jailed pending a trial or plea on the 8-count, 6-page federal felony indictment.

Cyr is accused in a federal indictment of several counts of child abuse for allegedly injuring a young female child. The following child abuse against the girl was alleged in the indictment: Strangling, choking, hitting in the face, arm twisting, pushing and kicking down stairs, putting in headlock and more.

Last Friday – October 7, 2016, federal prosecutors filed a document about discovery issues that have been or will be given to the defense.

Cyr was also indicted on charges he was allegedly an habitual domestic violence offender allegedly tryng to strangle and otherwise abuse against his girlfriend/wife.

All the recent crimes were alleged to have occurred on the Isabella Reservation over the past three years.

A federal grand jury sitting in Bay City, MI returned the 8-count felony indictment on September 14, 2016 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Northern Division.

The federal prosecutors in the case are Asst. U.S. Attorney Roy R. Kranz in Bay City, Asst. U.S. Attorney Craig F. Wininger (branch offices chief) and Eastern District of Michigan U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade. Cyr is being represented by the U.S. Public Defenders Office.

The federal judges involved in the case are U.S. Magistrate Judge Patricia T. Morris and U.S. District Court Judge Thomas L. Ludington.

Judge Ludington on Sept. 29, 2016 set several crucial dates including a Feb. 14, 2017 deadline for a plea agreement and a trial date of March 7, 2017 at 8:30 a.m. Any plea deal can be held before Magistrate Judge Morris, under an agreement between the defense and prosecutors.

Cyr is a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan (SCIT)

In a tribal casino photo about a donation to the Flint Water Crisis last October, Cyr was identified as a SCIT Distribution Center Inventory Control Driver.

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – Officials in two northern Michigan counties are continuing their investigation tonight into the discovery of a body on the Lake Michigan shoreline near Naubinway – and officials say autopsy results are not complete for the man who allegedly jumped off a 20-foot boat last month.

The man who body was found along Lake Michigan by a pilot has been identified as Gregory Lawrence Froede, 39, of Harbor Springs, MI.

According to downstate newspapers, two years ago Froede was ordered to serve 90 days in jail with credit for 29 days served and fined for breaking and entering without owner’s consent.

According to Mackinac County Sheriff Scott A. Strait:

On Thursday, Oct. 6, 2016 at 11:45 a.m. – a pilot flying over Lake Michigan near Naubinway spotted a body on shoreline

The pilot reported the body and the Mackinac County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the area and located the body, the sheriff said.

The Mackinac County Medical Examiner was called to the scene. The ongoing probe involves two sheriff’s department on opposite sides of the Mackinaw Bridge.

greg-froebe-1The Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Department assisted at scene The body was taken to Grand Rapids, MI for a positive ID and an autopsy, the news release stated.

The full results of the autopsy are not available pending further testing, Sheriff Strait said.

The victim was last scene on Sept. 16, 2016 after he allegedly jumped overboard from a boat about two to three nautical miles north of Hog Island in Lake Michigan. The Mackinac County and Charlevoix County sheriff’s departments are continuing the investigation into circumstances surrounding this incident.

According to the Charlevoix County Sheriff Sheriff W.D. ‘Don’ Schneider

Daniel “Dan” Lee Rowland, 38, of Whitethorn, California was the only other person aboard the boat and told deputies authorities he covered the lake where his friend went missing for roughly two hours until the boat ran out of gas.

Rowland told officials he threw out life-jackets and a cooler into the lake to possibly help Froede survive. The boat did not have a radio and a cellphone was not working.

The two men left Harbor Springs Sept. 15 to camp on Garden Island (north of Beaver Island).

Rowland and the boat drifted ashore in Mackinac County early on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016.

The U.S. Coast Guard and a Charlevoix County sheriff marine unit both searched for the victim but his body was not found until Friday.

Alcohol may be a factor in the incident.

(Amasa, MI) – Michigan State Police say they are going to issue a news release in connection with last night’s active shooter incident in the Amasa area of Iron County, MI that has left at least one person in jail.

The news release has not been received by U.P. Breaking News but we have been hearing from our sources all day about what allegedly happened to trigger the SWAT-like response.

Even the patrons of a nearby bar were ordered to shelter in place as Michigan State Police and other law enforcement – including the Iron County Sheriff’s Department – all searched the area. It is not clear what happened to the man – but we have not received any information that he was injured in any way. A K-9 unit was called in, local residents say.

Police in SWAT-like geared scoured the area and a helicopter was called in.

Several sources say the incident happened at the home of 33-year-old Melissa “Missy” Hamilton-Sartori of Amasa, MI who is lodged in the Iron County Jail tonight, according to the VINE prisoner website.
She may have arrested on a probation violation – and there may be further charges filed. However the press release did not state whether she was the person arrested on probation violation – or if two people were arrested.

The charges against Hamilton-Sartori have not been released.

The woman was allegedly either angry at the man, or thought he was shooting up the area, or both.

MSP set up a command headquarters at the Tall Pines Apts., near the manhunt.

According to two sources, Sartori called police starting the incident after her neighbor was apparently harmlessly shooting a gun on his own property.

Sources claim the woman thought the man was out to get her – and numerous people claim the incident may be drug-related.

U.P. Breaking News is still awaiting a MSP press release.

We have been hearing from numerous sources and local residents all day who are frustrated because no official information has been released. U.P. Breaking News decided to release what we know because police have not – and we are getting many inquiries.

Fully-Engulfed House Fire in Bootjack area of Houghton County along Lake Superior battled by four fire departments – part of home, contents saved

Bootjack area house along Lake Superior was engulfed – however, flames contained by four fire departments

(Bootjack, Michigan) – Four fire departments battled a fully engulfed house fire this afternoon that heavily damaged a ranch-style home on Lake Superior – however fire officials were able to save some of the residence and its contents in a blaze tracked to the fireplace and chimney.

The owner of the home is in a nursing home and the couple renting it were not at home at the time. There were no injuries in the fire at a residence on Rabbit Bay Road.

The fire was reported by a passerby about 2:39 p.m. today (Sun., Oct. 9, 2016) at 45576 Rabbit Bay Road along Lake Superior, said longtime Bootjack Fire Chief Dan Sarazin, a retired state trooper.

Flames were “shooting out of the back and through the roof – and outside toward the lake,” Chief Sarazin told U.P. Breaking News.

Four fire departments from across Houghton County battled the blaze. Assisting the Bootjack Fire Department were the Lake Linden Fire department, the Hubbell Fire Department, the Calumet Township Fire Department, and the Mercy Ambulance Service.

The home is owned by Kenneth Thompson – who is believed to be about 80 years old and in a nursing home – was renting it to a couple who are thought to be out of town but on their way back. The couple apparently purchased a lot next to the home and planned to rent the house this winter.

The house “is salvageable” and “can be rebuilt,” Chief Sarazin said, adding the fire departments were also able to save some of the contents – as the four departments quickly brought the blaze under control.

Sarazin said the initial estimate of damage is about $50,000. An online site – that estimates the value of homes – put the value of the residence as over $100,000 – although the exact figures could not be confirmed.

The home was engulfed when firefighters arrive.

“The house had been burning for a while” before it was spotted by a passerby, Chief Sarazin said. “It burnt through the metal roof” and burned through the siding.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about two hours. There were no injuries.

The lining failed “causing a failure of the joints” after creosote caught fire and burned its way through an area where the fireplace and the chimney connect, Chief Sarazin said. Creosote can smolder and burn for a while before erupting into a fire – and officials think it started after the fire in the fireplace had burned down maybe to embers. “It smolders and builds up heat,” Chief Sarazin said of the creosote.

These kinds of fires are common in fireplaces and often happen when a fireplace just starts to be re-used again when the weather cools – as has happened across the U.P.

Sarazin described the home as a newer structure – a single story ranch style wood frame house located on Lake Superior.
