(Upper Peninsula of Michigan) – It was as if something was in the water, judging by the shear number of truly heinous assaults across the U.P. this weekend.

Here are only a few:

A man calls 911 early today saying he is running down the Northland Truck Trail with someone shooting at him , The trail is one of two ways to go on a dirt back-road between Dickinson County and Marquette County.
Outcome: We do not know, but lots of law enforcement was involved, can’t confirm possible arrest.

Man serious injured after being hit over the head with a guitar at his K.I. Sawyer home – girlfriend is suspect (arrest made).

Six-month-old baby in Chippewa County with a severely twist arm brought to War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie (outcome we do not know, CPS and police investigating)

Two women were charged with home invasion – both from Escanaba area – but one of the assaults committed in Marquette County (see our other stories for names etc.)

A fraction of the other assaults included woman whose boyfriend threatened to cut her wrists, another man disabled his girlfriend’s car and kicked her, a drunk very disorderly at Bell Hospital, another intoxicated person threatening twice to start killing people and cops if the UPSET drug team would not help him.

Chloe surrender

Now to our wanted suspect in that strangling incident at about 7 a.m. Sunday that sent a 36-year-old woman to the hospital.

The victim reported “difficulty breathing” after the attempted strangulation in room #8 at the usually quiet Wonderland Motel in Ishpeming, MI. The victim was rushed to U.P. Health System – Bell. The suspect allegedly used a phone cord to strangle the victim.

Ishpeming ambulances now called U.P. Health System “west” (in Marquette paramedics called east) but the hospital is commonly known as Bell Hospital in Ishpeming.

The suspect is 22-year-old Chloe Jazmin Shumate – wanted for the Jan. 21, 2018 incident. Online records state she has lived in Ishpeming and Champion, MI.
Police called her “a person of interest” in the assault.

he fled the scene – and if you know the whereabouts of Chloe Shumate – it will be safer for all if she surrenders. Please Chloe surrender.

Tracking dogs from the Michigan State Police K-9 unit tried unsuccessfully to follow her scent for very far. The case is being handled by the Ishpeming Police Department – and who sent thanks to those who assisted – MSP K-9 unit, the Negaunee Police Department and the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office.

The Wonderland Motel is located along U.S.-41 but its official address is on Palms Avenue in Ishpeming.

Its urgent you call Ishpeming Police or 911 if you have any info on Chloe. Chloe please surrender.

More on Morgan Meadows Road incident:

MorganMeadows graphic 1

The dispatcher told EMS, troopers and others that they were getting “second hand information” about a shooting

“The caller states that their friend called him and told him that his dad shot him in the leg,” the dispatcher said.
That apparent lie was perpetuated later by the father and son.

A review of the police tapes tells a story of either communication issues or flat out lies coming from those in the house.

The incident involved two neighboring addresses – 120 and 110 Morgan Meadows Road.

The people involved are:

75-year-old John A. Manchester, Sr.
53-year-old John A. Manchester, Jr.
Wendy Brown – John Jr.’s girlfriend

John Sr. told dispatchers “his son said is out of control and (the father) is now at 110 Morgan Meadows (Drive).”

The incident started at 120 Morgan Meadows – until the elder Manchester went to (family home) at 110 Morgan Meadow Road.

To add terror to confusion, officers knew that the contained lots of guns of all kinds.

“There is a gun room, a reloading room, and a gun safe in there,” a trooper warned units close to the home.

At one point the father told dispatchers over the phone that a .45 revolver had been taken away from his son but given back by the girlfriend.

The Manchester’s both kept telling the dispatcher there had been a shooting – and Jr. was the victim.

The father told the dispatcher that his son’s “bleeding is under control” – Junior is refusing EMS.”

The was also confusion about Wendy Brown – and why she was still in the house. The Manchester’s gave conflicting stories about Brown.
A dispatcher said despite “numerous verbal commands” from officers of the scene – Brown was not exiting the house.

“She is lying on the bed next to to long guns,” the dispatcher said.

The younger Manchester made it clear to police he did not trust the officers, however the son wanted to specifically talk to trooper he knew.
Even police were worried everything could suddenly go wrong – so be careful during the surrenders.”

“He is paranoid if he sees long guns he is probably going to get real excited,” an incident command trooper warned other officers.

“He’s going to be stepping out – no coat or anything” in his hands,” the dispatcher told officers. “He says he’s stepping out the front door right now – says he has nothing in his hands.”

“Tell him to start walking down the driveway,” said a trooper in command.

There are reports in other media of “warning shots” being fired – but it did not appear (based on audio) that police fired their weapons. If it happened it could not be verified by the audio tapes.

However, it is possible that a gun was discharged by someone in the house at the beginning of the dispute.

It appeared brown was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The Manchester men surrendered at different times. The son was arrested.
Troopers stated to the dispatcher they had been at the home on New Year’s Day. It was not clear why police were so familiar with those involved.

(Chippewa County, MI) – This is one bad guy that needs to be taken off the streets.

David Tadgerson wanted 1 (2)In fact – he has been upgraded to the Most Wanted List available on phone and pad apps (see below).

U.P. Breaking News is especially concerned about the rate of domestic violence in the U.P. – and often a Marquette federal prosecutor gets the bums convicted and sent to prison. You have to be especially heinous to be charged in federal court.

34-year-old David Paul Tadgerson is accused in a brutal attack on his girlfriend on a Native American reservation in Chippewa County.

If people have information as to his whereabouts, they can contact the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office at 906-635-6355, Chippewa County Central Dispatch at 906-495-3312 (911 for emergencies) or they can submit an anonymous tip using our Sheriff mobile app under the “Submit-A-Tip” icon. See link to apps below.

David Tadgerson wanted 2

One source says:

Tadgerson is wanted for aggravated assault on girlfriend.

He is to believed be hiding in woods between Raco, MI and Eckerman, MI.

Tadgerson you can run – but you will be found. Everyone report tips.

Tadgerson also has a federal court case from a few years ago – Tadgerson was busted for operating a motor vehicle without a registration and under a plea deal got fines – but no jail time.

But he has much bigger problems now. If the attack was on the reservation – he could face federal charges for that.

But now he is wanted for aggravated assault, failure to appear in court and flight to avoid prosecution.

U.P. Breaking News Exclusive – It Goes Both Ways: Federal Native American Domestic Violence Crack down by federal prosecutors results in non-native female charged with assaulting a Native American man on tribal property

U.P. Breaking News has been focusing on the problem of habitual domestic violence involving Native American Males and female victims – and this is first we’ve found to this point with a female suspect up on federal charges

(Grand Rapids, MI) – In the past two years, federal prosecutors have been making cases against male domestic violence suspects on Native American reservations across northern Michigan and now a non-native female has been charged with assaulting a Native American man on tribal lands.

Marissa Nicole Sherlock 2Marissa Nicole Sherlock, a non-native, is accused of a Class B federal misdemeanor for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend on June 26, 2016 in Calhoun County “in Indian Country” on “lands held in trust Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi Indians.” The tribal lands are located within Calhoun County.

The victim is “an adult Indian male” identified only as “L.D.”

A non-jury trial is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on August 30, 2016 at federal court in Grand Rapids. The final pretrial conference is August 23.

Sherlock is charged in a federal criminal information filed by Asst. U.S. Attorney Jeff J. Davis, the federal prosecutor in the case filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan. The federal misdemeanor charge carries a much lesser sentence than the federal felony habitual domestic violence cases that require three previous convictions in state or tribal court.

The case has also been assigned to Nancy A. Bogren, the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribal Prosecutor and a Special Asst. U.S. Attorney

Sherlock is free on personal recognizance bond and must abide by several court conditions including not to contact the victim.

She was freed after entering a not guilty plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ray Kent. Sherlock’s defense attorney is Asst. Federal Public Defender Richard D. Stroba, according to federal court documents.
The Nottawasepe Potawatamie Reservation is located in Athens Township in southwestern Calhoun County in southwestern Michigan. The tribe has purchased an additional 230 acres of land for its use and operates a gaming casino in Battle Creek, according to Wikipedia.

The worst tribal domestic violence case in 30 years on the bench: Federal judge sends Hannahville girlfriend beater to prison for 5 years

(Marquette, MI) – A federal on Thursday called it the worst case of tribal domestic violence he’s seen in nearly three decades on the court.

Native American Domestic Violence Pixs (5)U.S. District Court Judge R. Allan Edgar then sentenced 23-year-old Peter Meshigaud of the Hannahville Indian Community in Wilson, MI to five years (60 months) in prison followed by three years of supervised release for the severe beating of his girlfriend on October 19, 2013 at their home on the Indian reservation.

Judge Edgar said it was the worst case of domestic violence “in my 29 years in the bench” and noted Meshigaud has an “explosive disorder.”

Meshigaud was jealous, “out of control” and suspected his girlfriend of cheating on him – and that led to the beating, both sides agreed.

During sentencing, Meshigaud was in leg irons and surrounded by U.S. Marshals while he stood before the judge.

Native American Domestic Violence Pixs (2)

“We don’t want him exploding,” the judge said. “He needs a cooling off period.”

The attacked occurred against Meshigaud’s girlfriend on the Hannahville Indian reservation.

The victim, whose name we are withholding, gave a mixed message when addressing the court.

“I live in fear,” she said but quickly added “I forgive him.”

The judge was concerned about “veiled threats” in a letter Meshigaud sent the victim while in jail.

The letter said “he has eyes and ears everywhere – and that if she is dating someone else its going to be bad,”the judge said.

“He’s a walking crime wave,” the judge said of Meshigaud who has numerous domestic violence convictions. “He doesn’t seem to understand.  I don’t think he’s gotten the point yet.”

Meshigaud “beat the victim with his fists,” said Asst. U.S. Attorney Hannah Bobee, U.S. District Court Western District of Michigan

. “She had to trick him to escape out a bedroom window.”

“She thought he (Meshigaud) was going to kill her,” said Prosecutor Bobee, who is Native American and an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Meshigaud has a reputation for fighting with police, fellow inmates, disobeying court orders and has past convictions in tribal and state courts for aggravated domestic violence, assault and battery, and destruction of property, Judge Edgar said.

Four of his convictions occurred in tribal court, the judge said.

Edgar said Meshigaud’s actions are “nothing short of horrendous.”

“He has learned absolutely nothing” from past court appearances, Judge Edgar said adding its an “extraordinary case” that shows the need for “upward” departure from mandatory federal sentencing guidelines.

“I feel remorse and I am ashamed of myself,” Meshigaud told the judge adding he has already served 271 in county jail.

Blaming some of his behavior on a drinking problem, Meshigaud told the judge he will work on being more kind and respectful.

Defense Attorney Paul Peterson tried hard to convince Judge Edgar that Meshigaud is young enough to change his ways but admitted “he’s never had a wake up call … he’s getting one now.”

Meshigaud “felt she was cheating,” Peterson said adding his client has an “explosive disorder” and “drinking issues”

Meshigaud was ordered to undergo 500 hours of drug treatment and domestic violence treatment. He was ordered to pay $1,160 in restitution to the Hannahville Indian Community Housing Department .
