(Marquette County, MI) – Federal plane crash investigators are on the scene this morning of double fatal small plane crash in west Marquette County.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the plane crash that happen near a small airport with a grass landing strip.
Under a near full moon, law enforcement officers spent the night at the scene in a remote and extremely uneven and bumpy field covered with ripe wild blueberries and occasional shrubs plus bushes.
The small plane crash that happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 in Ely Township.
The plane apparently crashed while approaching a private turf airstrip named the commonly known locally as the Honkala airstrip.
The plane crashed in a large field covered in blueberry brush, dead pines and other scattered trees.
The field where the plane crashed is located off County Road 581 along County Road CD in Ely Township. The plane was located about a half mile into the field and was apparently on approach to the airport crashing about a mile or so short of the runway.
One victim was extricated from the wreckage of the small plane and rushed to the road in a pickup truck as paramedics and first responders held an IV bag and worked on his injuries. He died from his injuries.
A second man died in the wreckage. The area has been condoned off and emergency crews will remain on the scene over night.

A U.P. Health System Marquette helicopter transported one of the victims to Marquette, but he died over night. No names have been released.
