(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) – A man showed up at the Soo hospital just after 10 a.m. today and reported he had been shot in a hunting accident.
Today is the opening day of a five-week spring turkey season.

The victim is at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie, MI. It is unclear if he shot himself or was wounded by another hunter.

Law enforcement was sent to the hospital to investigate the case. It is not known if Michigan DNR Conservation Officers have been notified about the incident.

The victim was able to make it to the hospital without an ambulance – so his injuries are thought to be relatively minor. The name of the victim has not been released.

In fact, he may have been wounded by some shotgun pellets rather than a high power rifle bullet.

Today is the opening of the 2018 Spring Turkey Season in Michigan including the entire Upper Peninsula.

(Trout Lake, MI) – Officials in Chippewa County are trying to call in anyone from with s law enforcement with snowmobiles to assist in the search for a missing, stranded snowmobiler with medical issues.

The on-duty Michigan State Police troopers and Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department deputies do not have the proper cold weather gear or snowmobiles – so this search got off to  slow but deliberate start.

Nearly one and a half hours after 4:10 a.m. ET distress call to 911, the late word is one officer duty officer was headed to another location to get his machine and gear.  The officer retrieved a Four-by-Four (4-by-4) with a snow track at the Brimley State Park  and is en-route to the staging area as of 5:20 a.m. ET Saturday morning.

U.P. Breaking News has not been able to confirm the missing man’s name.

The brother of the victim – who is caring for a child – has offered the use of two of his snowmobiles but the sleds are almost out of gas and no-one has proper clothing for a cold weather search.

Trout Lake Missing Snowmobiler Map Mark's Trading Post

Emergency officials are staging in the parking lot of Mark’s Trading Post on M-123 in Trout Lake, MI.

Trout Lake Township EMS and Chippewa Township EMS have been paged out by Chippewa County 911.

The last ping from the man’s cell phone was (today) at 1:30 a.m. ET on Saturday morning, April 21 2018 near S. Wegwas Road off M-123. Man is believed to be east and south of Wegwas Lake – and possibly off one of the local snowmobile trails including Trail 47.

The man was headed to a cabin in the area.

snowmobiler search map #2

The situation was initially made difficult because without sufficient manpower and sleds its hard too launch an effective search. Plus police usually not allowed to go after snowmobiler out of gas but this man has medical issues.

Officials are trying to figure out the best way to help. Police have tried calling his cellphone (goes to voicemail) and sent him a text message.

The snowmobiler apparently ran out of gas – and one possible location is between the Trout Lake Tavern – and W. Huckleberry Lake Road in Trout Lake Township. But possibly three miles in different direction.
This all appears to be in the area of – south of – the Muir Woods Nature Preserve

He is apparently within a few miles of help but is cold, stranded on the trail, dead cell phone, and has diabetic condition – and his brother says it is unclear if man has been drinking

About 9 p.m. Friday, Marquette County 911 Central Dispatch was notified about the traffic stop by Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers.

The CO’s would later request deputies with the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department to help and transport the suspect.

Reports from the scene stated Campbell allegedly registered a .19 on a PBT – portable breath test.

It’s not clear how a Skandia woman and the DNR happened to cross paths Friday night, but two DNR units with conservation officers were involved in some type of traffic stop. It is not known if the weapons charge indicates they were watching the woman.

Reports from the scene stated the suspect was involved in alleged “fleeing and eluding” – however its not clear if she failed to stop or made the arrest difficult.

Charges include felony third-offense impaired driving, possession of a firearm/weapon under the influence of alcohol and failure to obey a police officer during a traffic stop.

Campbell has past addresses in Marquette, Ishpeming, Stanton, Grand Rapids, Newport and Wixom, Michigan.
