(Watersmeet Township, MI) – A memorial service will be held Wednesday for a popular Minocqua, WI man and civic leader who was killed in that bizarre Wednesday accident when a Caterpillar skid Steer that he was driving to plow snow for a barge on a lake in Gogebic County, MI

Memorial to Tom Handrick, age 55 of Minocqua, WI

Memorial planned for Tom Handrick, age 55 of Minocqua, WI

55-year-old Tom Handrick of Minocqua died when his heavy machine floundered and sank in broken ice next to the barge about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 in Watersmeet Township.

The barge had a large heavy duty crane on its deck – sometimes called a derrick in larger projects. The crane had a big sign on its front that states “SAFETY!”

Handrick was the longtime owner of Lakeland Landscaping and a member of the local Lions Club and on the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

Divers and cold-water rescue officials recovered Handrick’s body about an hour after the freak accident and he was transported by ambulance to the Eagle River Memorial Hospital (Scroll down to read Mr. Handrick’s obituary notice).

Officials have not released who owns the barge or crane, and what it was doing on Thousand Island Lake. Numerous officials with the Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Police were on the scene.

The freak accident involved a barge, a crane, and a heavy equipment Skid Steer. Officials have not said whether any Michigan Regulatory Agencies will be investigating the crash. It is not known if it is necessary for officials to notify the Michigan Occupation Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).

Both begged the attacker to stop – the attacker being the mom’s boyfriend.

Evan Gabriel Smith

Evan Gabriel Smith

46-year-old Evan Gabriel Smith was sentenced to six years in federal prison on Fri., Feb. 9, 2018 for brutally trying to strangle his girlfriend at their home in a tribal nation in the western Upper Peninsula.

The attack was done in front of the victim’s daughter and her friend – who pleaded with Smith to stop attacking her mom.

In addition to being a habitual woman beater, Smith has convictions for cutting telephone lines and home invasion.

The assault happened on trust lands of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians – located in Gogebic County, MI.

Smith was sentenced on Friday in Marquette, MI by Chief U.S. District Court Judge Robert J. Jonker. Smith was ordered to get treatment for his long history of domestic violence.

Prior to the assault, Smith already had convictions in different Michigan courts for assaults against women he dated.
Smith was indicted on three felonies in May 2017 by a federal grand jury sitting in Marquette, MI.

The charges included domestic assault by strangulation and assault with intent to commit murder.

Under plea bargain, Smith pleaded guilt to domestic assault by a habitual offender.

On March 2, 20l7, the Smith violently attacked his girlfriend duration an argument in a home they shared.

Smith admitted he pinned down his girlfriend on the bedroom floor and then tried to strangle her.

The victim’s “daughter and her friend, hearing the commotion in the bedroom, came into the room and told” Smith to stop, the plea agreement states. Smith then fled the scene.

Smith has two prior state convictions for domestic violence involving assaults upon intimate partners:
September 10, 2001, in Iron County 95-B District Court in Crystal Falls, MI.
February 7, 2003 in Isabella County 2lst Circuit Court in Mount Pleasant, MI
The federal prosecutors in the case are Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner and Assistant U.S. Attorney Maarten Vermaat.

(St. Ignace, MI) – A St. Ignace man was assaulted on Tuesday night in his home reporting an attempted stabbing to 911.
One of the suspects is the victim’s sister – and another claims to be a former record producer from the Boston area.

23-year-old man from St. Ignace, MI (booked into the Chippewa County)

——-

Numerous police officers from two counties pulled over a car Tuesday night in the southbound lane of 1-75 near mile marker 373 apparently near the Mackinac County/Chippewa County line. Police were searching 1-75 because the victim reported the suspects may be headed to Kinross or the Soo area. Three suspects were detained.

One suspect – 23-year-old Ivan Parker of Sault Ste. Marie, MI – is a native of the Boston area who claims on Facebook to be a former record producer at ARTIS. Parker is lodged in the Chippewa County Jail.

A BOLO for their purple-four door sedan was broadcast after a the victim – Francis “Frank” John Chingwa of St. Ignace, MI – told 911 the suspect’s may be headed to his his sister’s house.

Chingwa reported a domestic assault in his St. Ignace home involving an alleged attempting stabbing. He also told 911 at least one of the suspects may have a gun. He identified that man as Donald – however no one by that name was arrested in Mackinac or Chippewa counties.

However, booked at the same time as the victim’s sister was one of her Facebook friends about the same age. He is a 23-year-old St. Ignace man – however we do not want to release the man’s name until we get confirmation he is a suspect.
Authorities have not released anything publicly about the domestic violence report.

Prison term for habitual tribal domestic batterer: 28-year-old Justin Ryan Wykoff of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan – The federal crackdown on tribal domestic violence continues across northern Michigan

(Marquette, MI) -These guys apparently think they are super tough, til they cower before a scolding from a federal judge in Marquette.

For the past three years, federal prosecutors in northern Michigan have been filing charges and going to great effort to protect victims of habitual domestic violence.

28-year-old Justin Ryan Wykoff of Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan was given three and a half years (42) months in federal prison without parole for habitual tribal batterer.

He was sentenced for domestic violence by a habitual offender on Nov. 7, 2016 by U.S. District Judge Paul L. Maloney.

Wykoff admitted attacking his live-in girlfriend on Dec. 18, 2015 in Chippewa County on tribal trust lands of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

The attacked occurred in the parking lot of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Health Center.

Sault Ste. Marie Tribal Police investigated the case after a witness came forward.

Like many being prosecuted in federal court in Marquette, Wykoff has a history of state and tribal domestic violence convictions involving the same girlfriend.

Judge Maloney condemned Wykoff’s treatment of women – as federal prosecutors continue sending tribal domestic violence offenders to prison for long terms.

Asst. U.S Attorney Hannah Bobee and Asst. U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner have been aggressively proceeding with habitual domestic violence cases on tribal lands. They have the backing of their boss in Grand Rapids – U.S. Attorney Patrick A. Miles, Jr.,- the head federal prosecutor for the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan that includes the U.P.

Meanwhile in other tribal domestic violence cases:

38-year-old Scott Joseph Loonsfoot of L’Anse, MI:
A sentencing date has been set for 38-year-old Scott Joseph Loonsfoot of L’Anse, MI – as his presenting report was filed in federal court.

In a federal plea agreement, Loonsfoot admitted on April 15, 2016 he strangled his KBIC girlfriend.

In the agreement Loonsfoot admits the “factual basis of guilt.”

The attack occurred at a residence on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community reservation in Baraga County.

Loonsfoot admitted that he strangled or attempted to strangle his dating partner. Both are Native American.

“During the altercation” with the victim, Loonsfoot “grabbed her by the neck and intentionally applied pressure” and the victim “could not breathe,” the plea agreement states.

The maximum sentence Loonsfoot could receive in his upcoming sentencing is 10 years in federal prison.

43-year-old Glenn Daniel Tolonen, Sr. of Baraga, Michigan is serving a two and a half years (30 months) in federal prison after being sentence earlier this year for habitual domestic violence.
Tolonen must also complete a 500 hour residential substance abuse program and a batterer’s treatment program. He will be placed on two years supervised release after serving his prison term.

2016-gogebic-county-search-and-rescue-1

(Gogebic County, Michigan) – A western Upper Peninsula deer hunter lost in the worst possible conditions has been found alive by Gogebic County Search and Rescue plus others.

But we can all agree better to be alive.
The victim has been identified by many sources as 51-year-old Larry James Pietila of 14268 N. U.S.-45 Hwy. in Bruce Crossing, Michigan.
However officials sources are remaining quiet and referring all calls to the Michigan State Police who are in charge of this investigation.

larry-pietila-2Now it may bring up the questions about whether its better to be alive than dead – jail or whatnot. However, the last time we checked the jail registry online Mr. Pietila was not listed as arrested but not all U.P. counties cooperate with the registry.

Reason for all that: Mr.Pietila is a convicted felon (Criminal Sexual Conduct – CSC 4th degree many variables). See below for all that info near end of story.
Convicted felons are not allowed to carry firearms but there is a loophole used by many felons (its only fair everyone). Felons can possess muzzleloaders – long gun and pistol.
larry-pietila-1Also we only have his arrest photos – and we are efforting recent non-court photos.

He spent more than 12 hours in the woods – and the missing hunter call was received about 7:30 p.m. CT Saturday night, Nov. 19, 2016.

The Bruce Crossing man was found alive but very cold about 2 a.m. Central Time – because he yuelled to rescuers. Those rescuers had to muck through a very cold swamp and deep snow – with more falling. They reached him about 2:20 a.m.

At one point, a rescuer reported to others who were incoming that they would need to travel to the SW about “3,500 feet” that’s like 11 football fields. Then they carried Pietila out – about a mile.
The rescuers waded through terrible conditions that are sucky, mucky, gucky (Our words because they are accurate – even tho may not be official words – involving the regular meanings of those words).

After the hunter was found, officials called for the American Red Cross to help two adults. One staging area was the Ebb Lake Campground.

“It’s pretty thick,” said one rescuer.

The hunter was found in a thick swampy area about two miles from his vehicle.

Over a mile into remote snowy swamp land the missing hunter was found around 3 a,m. and it took another two hours to walk him out to an ambulance. The victim is en-route to the Aspirus Ironwood Hospital.

The victim had a compass but got turned around.

He was deer hunting after parking his car near IMP Lake in a remote area.

Apparently he became turned around in the snowy terrible conditions.

Those on the scene included Gogebic County Search and Rescue, the Gogebic County Sheriff;s department and the Lac View Desert Tribal Police.

A call for help was received by tribal police – and the all-night search was on.

The staging area for the ambulance was Old Forest Service Road 3940 and U.S. Highway  2.

The difficult search involving dozens of people was several miles south of U.S. 2.

Stop throwing poor Native Americans in federal prison if you ignore serious white collar crimes in Upper Peninsula – U.P. Breaking News Editorial to the U.P. Feds

friendly fyi to Federal Prosecutors: U.P. and statewide white collar crime including indifference to human life – linked to recent cop-shooting deaths – prison riot – and other alarming environment crimes unrelated to Flint

Open message to Michigan’s two top cops – U.S. Attorneys Barbara L. McQuade and Patrick A. Miles, Jr.

The public is going to lose faith in the federal prosecutors office if you do not bring serious charges against our Governor Rick Snyder – and for that matter all the state, federal and locals involved in allowing crimes to happen (often under pressure) or indifference.

While maybe it is needed due to serious crimes – buts it is easy to throw a low-income Native American in federal prison. It is not easy to go after white collar crime especially white white-collar crime.

This comes from a big fan of the federal prosecutors and all the hard work they do across the Upper Peninsula and the state. But Michigan’s budget cuts have gone beyond the bone – and now U.P. ground blood-stained with the innocent.

U.P. Michigan State Police and other law enforcement budget cuts has forced the cops to be psychiatrists – and the mental health system is collapsing – suicides grow – and now retired Yoopers are being shot and killed in their bedrooms by cops who are punished if they follow protocol.
Modern police training dictates handling a suicidal person with the proper patience and care – not rushing into a man’s home. If I were the state troopers and the other cops I would be demanding to stop this before U.P. cops get killed. They normally have many other calls to go to and most of the time barging in doesn’t result in a death – its a budget issue red pen vs red blood.

You folks spend a lot of time throwing Native Americans in federal prison – most rightfully so – but when it comes to white collar corruption in the U.P. you are failing. Period. Your hard-working U.P. staff can barely handle the Native American related caseload – I know because I follow hundreds of cases.

Preferably it should be federal RICO charges against the Governor and his department heads and other minions – under the Racketeering Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.

In fact, as was done in the “ongoing crime spree” by the feds to the Illinois governor – you should act immediately to remove him from office – or take he and his top staff out of power.

In the Upper Peninsula cops this year have shot and killed two men in their own homes – during incredibly a “well-being check.” The Upper Peninsula prisons are so understaffed that another inmate riot like Kinross – is all but certain especially with under-staffing and angry inmates.

The U.P. state prison meals lines are a huge issue for under-staffing – dangerously riot prone – plus entrenched supervisors who just do not care about inmate rights (We are not sympathetic for those who commit violent crimes – but remember folks we are trying to run a society here).

We can prove – give you places to probe – that the state lied publicly about the U.P. prison riot before and after it happened – but all you have to do is read the Sunday U.P. Papers to get it. U.P. Breaking News was the lone wolf.

Plus a Kinross inmate just died after his medical needs were neglected – and we are about to report on another inmate who also just died – in the Jackson, MI area because of the lack of proper medical care.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, according to numerous sources.

This can not be allowed to happen in a civilized society – especially when faith in law enforcement is at stake. We need law enforcement. But white collar corruption especially when it leads to deaths – can not be tolerated..

These are not minor issues – even if we put aside the poisoning of a generation of low-income Flint children.

We have proof the state lied about environmental crimes in the U.P. including the destruction statewide of the deer herd – and the lie about the reason for the wolf hunt – that federal taxpayers paid a millions to reintroduce to have them killed for pennies a piece.

Plus if a grand jury probed the connection between the Marquette County Road Commission (notorious for pitiful record keeping) – and Kennecott and even the current mine owners over the superhighway that has replaced the once fabled two-rut/dirt Triple A Road for the Acid Mine – all those crimes from unrepentant local elected officials to state officials (we can prove it) – and both mine owners is rife with special treatment, sweetheart deals and luxury travel. Kennecott’s worldwide crime spree has been widely documented and they brought their dirty ways to the U.P. – then fled. No coincidence.

The problem is we can not trust the Michigan Attorney General’s Office to properly investigate its own boss. Remember it is called a conflict of interest.

So – white collar crime in Michigan should be just as important in the Upper Peninsula for the feds as throwing impoverished Native Americans in prison – which many deserve and we love the domestic violence and other initiatives.

U.P. Breaking News has clearly outline these crimes in our news stories and editorials. Now we officially put some of the responsibility on the federal doorstep if more people die or there is another riot. We have warned you – and everyone that U.P. lives are – indeed – at stake.

(Marquette, MI) – A federal grand jury in Marquette has indicted two men in connection with separate violent cases with one of the cases involving bloody domestic assault crimes and the third is charged with sex crimes against a male child.

In a case out of Menominee County, Patrick Roy Wandahsega is named in a two-count indictment charging him with aggravated sexual abuse of a child under 12 years old and abusive sexual contact with a child under 12 years

The two-page indictment charges Wandahsega with the sex crimes against a child that allegedly happened between December 14-18, 2015 “on land held in trust by the United States for the use of the Hannahville Indian Community, in the Northern Division of the Western District of Michigan.”

In count one, Wandahsega “did knowingly engage in a sexual act with” a boy who is an “Indian male, who had not yet attained the age of twelve year,” the indictment states.

Wandahsega allegedly “used his finger to penetrate” the victim’s “anal opening with an intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, degrade, or arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person,” the indictment states

Under count two, Wandahsega “did knowingly engage in and intentionally cause sexual contact with and by another person, specifically, the intentional touching of the genitalia, groin, or buttocks” of the boy “who had not yet attained the age of twelve years, with an intent to abuse, humiliate, harass, degrade, or arouse or gratify the sexual desire of any person.” the indictment alleges.

Meanwhile the grand jury returned indictments against two men in connection with violent domestic assaults – one of the cases U.P. Breaking News reported extensively on with graphic bloody photos.

In Gogebic County, David Kel Baldwin, Jr. is named in a three-count indictment accusing him of “assault resulting in substantial bodily injury” that allegedly occurred on August 12, 2016 “on land held in trust by the United States for the use of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians, in the Northern Division of the Western District of Michigan,” the indictment charges.

In counts one and two, Baldwin allegedly assaulted “his spouse and intimate partner, and such assault resulted in substantial bodily injury ” and is charged with two counts of “assault resulting in serious bodily injury”

In count three, the grand jury charged Baldwin with assault with intent to murder in connection with an alleged attack with a dangerous weapon on that same night and basic location but against a male victim “with a dangerous weapon, that is, one or both of the following, a glass jar and a wooden chair, with the intent to do bodily harm,” the indictment states.
