(Hubbell, MI) – For the second time this winter, a high angle rescue is underway at Hungarian Falls in Hubbell, MI.

Numerous rescue teams were called to the falls at about 5:10 p.m. ET tonight, April 4, 2018.

The victim fell about 30 feet down to the base one of the three falls.

The 19-year-old female is apparently suffering from a broken arm and other issues.

Initially, rescuers though the victim fell 15 to 20 feet – however a Michigan Tech University paramedic is with the victim and informed the others that the woman fell about 30 feet.

“It’s the same area as last time,” said a fire official referring to a 60-foot fall injuring a man and then his friend during Feb. 2018.

Among those paged to the scene are the Hubbell Volunteer Fire Department, Calumet Township Volunteer Fire Department and numerous surrounding departments. The high angle rescue may include rappelling down to the victim and pulling her up.

“A rope is needed for extrication” – and the rescue area is located about 30 feet off a hiking trail.

This is a unique waterfall in that a local community fundraising project in 2013 kept part of it open to the general public. Hungarian Falls is located in Hubbell, Michigan not far from Houghton/Hancock and is seperated into three different drops.  The upper falls and the surrounding 10 acres was put into a land trust that saved it from being bought up by a private party.  Now the waterfall is able to be seen by visitors and their posterity down the decades.  To learn more about how this happened visit the trust website at: http://www.keweenawlandtrust.org/
Downstream from the Hungarian Falls Nature Area are the other two falls that make up Hungarian Falls.  These are both located on DNR land and are open to the public.  The middle falls is sometimes referred to as “The Bluffs” and is a very beautiful spot to visit even if the water levels are low.  The falls drop about 25 feet vertically over sandstone ledges and fallen boulders.  The middle falls finishes into a small pool underneath surrounded by a white pine and hemlock forest.

(Hubbell, Michigan) – Dozens of emergency  personnel are working to rescue a 20-year-old man who fell off the largest of the three falls that are popular with hikers and tourists.

Two people have been injured.

The rescue call started about 2:25 p.m. ET this afternoon, Fri., Feb. 9, 2018 in Osceola Township.

The victim and a male friend  were climbing the trails around the falls.
Somehow, the man slipped off the top of the largest fall and onto the jagged ice below possibly breaking his ankle and more.

Hours into the rescue that friend became hypothermic as temps are frigid.
The friend “is extremely cold – not doing well – not feeling good,” one fire official radioed to the dispatcher. Another friend on the scene took the victim’s helper to the hospital.

One rescuer estimated the fall at 70 feet. Online first person stories about the falls state the highest is almost 60 feet from the bottom.

The victim is a “20-year-old male who fell off – off the falls – and onto the ice and is unable to put any pressure on his foot,” the dispatcher told those responding.

The man has a “possible broken ankle is unable to put any pressure on it,” the dispatcher said, adding the victim’s friend realized rescuers were going to have trouble reaching him.

“His friend is trying to move him to a better location,” the dispatcher said.
Snowshoes were of little use. As we publish, rescuers had just reached the man and were bringing him out for a trip to the hospital.

Among the agencies responding are the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Dollar Bay First Responders, Mercy Ambulance Service, the Tamarac City Volunteer Fire Department, the Osceola Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Calumet Township Volunteer Fire Department and its group of rappelling experts for high-angle rescues. The same rappelling group was sent to that fatal tanker accident this past weekend on a bridge in Chassell, MI.

Cops do many things each day to help people that you never hear about. So congrats to Chippewa County law enforcement – from city, county and state police agencies.

 

Hunting camp blaze in Bootjack battled by numerous fire departments in Houghton County, MI

(Lake Linden, MI) – Numerous firefighters are responding to the report of a structure on fire in Bootjack area.
The blaze is said to be at a hunting camp located along Jacobsville Road in the Bootjack area.
At least four fire departments are battling the blaze.
The Boot Jack Fire Department has called for mutual aid from Lake Linden Fire Department, Hubbell Fire Department and Tamarack City Fire Department.
The Calumet Township Fire Department was paged but cancelled for a specialty team.
No injuries have been reported.

At same time, Houghton Fire Department has been dispatched to reports of an electrical fire at Wadsworth Hall on Michigan Tech University campus. Possibly light fixture. No Injuries

Family man Doug Lintz made Christmas dinner for loved ones just hours before his death

(Iron River, MI) – The family of the latest Upper Peninsula elderly resident to die in a daylight fire is questioning why no autopsy was performed – and the victim is being remembered tonight as a caring family man who spent his final hours with those he loved – and was known for being an expert outdoorsman and taxidermist.

He even cooked Christmas dinner for loved one’s only hours before his death. This despite suffering from cancer.

60-year-old Douglas “Doug” Michael Lintz died on Monday afternoon in a fire that quickly swept through his home at 1119 N. River Avenue in Iron River, MI.

U.P. fire officials have not been owning up to all the blazes in a recent spate of strange fires – more than a dozen in three weeks – including one today in Skandia and another fire today in Iron River. We have no details about either blaze.

Lintz’s longtime female friend Kristine “Kris” McNamara was not at his home when the fire broke out – but reportedly was there earlier in the day. She has her own residence.

Lintz was a self-employed taxidermist and talented at reloading of bullets and shotgun shells.

Lintz made Christmas dinner for family friend Alaina Seymour and her kids.

That family friend and neighbor, who has known the victim since she was 12 years old, could only watch in grief and horror as Mr. Lintz’s home burned in a fire of unknown origin.

“He started hunting and fishing at about 12 or 13,” his brother said tonight. “At 13 years old, he was professionally employed by Hyde and Kidd of Utica, MI” – a business known as a hunting and fishing taxidermy shop. The store also included everything that Lintz loved – guns, ammo, bows, plus fishing gear and and related stuff.

Apparently the Michigan State Police Fire Marshall and local fire officials did not want an autopsy performed.

“The undertaker picked him up at the house and was going to the funeral home,”his brother said. “I was dumbfounded! No autopsy!”

The fire chief told family “they probably will never know the cause due to water damage and freezing,” Lintz said about his brother’s tragedy.

Lintz’s father’s side of the family has Upper Peninsula roots.

“Doug’s wish was to be cremated without funeral or fuss,” according to his brother Lyn Lintz. “He will be going to Sidnaw after cremation.”

It is one of over a dozen U.P. house fires in recent weeks documented by U.P. Breaking News – but fire officials in several jurisdictions are refusing comment. The death of Mr. Lintz was preceded by two elderly residents who died recently in a daylight fire at their home in Fulton,. MI in the Copper Country in Keweenaw County.

Blaming the evil press is cop out – especially when most of the U.P. news media is basically docile

Sadly this comes in the wake of the most recent death – 60-year-old Douglas Michael Lintz (born 1956) – who died in his home on Monday afternoon at 1119 N. River Avenue in Iron River, MI.

Why has nothing been said about all the fires – and all the elderly deaths?

Fire officials only released the victim’s name today – and one newspaper speculated there might be more than one victim – a female.

We still do not know officially what happened to the female occupant of the home.

Douglas Michael Lintz, 60, was a native of Utica, Michigan – and graduated from Utica High School in 1974, according to his Facebook page.

We tried – and are trying – to get photos of all involved – but none existed of the couple in Fulton in Copper Country.

What happened to the other occupant of the home. Who else was home at the time?

Has she been given a place to stay. What is happening? Her name is reportedly Kristine McNamara – and we have reached out to six family members but none have said anything about her status. Would be glad to run info on a fundraiser.

Sometimes the media fears the public doesn’t understand these are real humans unless you see a photo – not a quick blip of 15 seconds on TV news.

There have been so many recent major structure and other fires in Schoolcraft County – no info released – that we have lost count.

Too many people have died and too many homes have burned in past month for the U.P. Firefighters to do their usual run and hide. U.P. Breaking News has immense respect for firefighters and law enforcement – but a lot of blood is now at both of their doorsteps.

Maybe the shootings and the fires were not the fault of those officials – but it still lands smack in their laps especially when it gets unacceptably high.

We suspect poverty is behind a lot of these goings on – and how state budget cuts have trashed the system from top to bottom like blood letting.

In some TV newsrooms it is a joke – go do the annual smoke detector and batteries story. That can not be the only answer to this horrendous turn of events.

Are the victim’s poverty stricken – have issues not addressed by healthcare – what. What safety precautions were in place or not? If the U.P. Firefighters Association refuses to answer this – then shame on these officials – for all future blood is directly on your hands. You need to try and act like you care more than has been shown. The media is not the enemy – that is old-fashioned thinking.

No more elderly should burn to death (or smoke inhalation) in their homes – especially in broad daylight – without some kind of message from firefighters. There could be many reasons that fire departments do not interact with media (sometimes even the DNR officials act like children with media – only want us to get pictures days later) – but it is high time the U.P. Firefighters Association started to become more relevant.

I have also heard equipment is a big issue – after much was spent on across the trail mammoth big vehicles. How many firefighters are there actively volunteering or working in the U.P.

What are the names of the fire chiefs of each and every department?

Why is information not being released?

Who is to blame for this drastic oversight of public protection (some modern departments would consider it a dereliction of duty)?

What are their home and cell numbers – and lets work out something where info can be reported to a central source and proactively given to the media!

Listen I get it – many Yoopers like to be treated like mushrooms or act like the media is so terrible.

But now that three elderly are dead – we are calling your hand over false provincialism with gatekeepers thinking they are Gods.

Check your smoke detector batteries is not going to get it this time. Why were these elderly trapped – specifically. Why did the fires start – really – not just some woodstove thing.

I can only hope that the U.P. firefighters care enough they can address these fires without some kind of white wash.

There have been too many fires in past month or so – disgusting that the public is not being warned – and if it is different reasons – then the firefighters association should take five minutes and tell us..

About 80 percent of the U.P. serious house fires never get reported by the media.

Whether its intentional due to insurance costs/fire ratings – or for many other reasons like media not listening to scanner, and the fire chiefs (for whatever reasons) do not tell the media and do not return calls. Then some chief’s will call media – but want to play coy – and not say the name of the occupant/owner – even if no injuries.

The U.P. media is very docile compared to the rest of the country – so you can not claim you are trying to protect victims from the menacing media.

(every other fire department in the U.S. releases this basic info – who, what, when, where, why – how). I think with all the death and destruction this year – the U.P. Firefighter’s Association needs to step up.

And let’s not just remind folks about smoke detectors – that are crucial – but have never had a landlord provide me with an easy one to change batteries.

The one-vehicle accident is reported on Airport Park Road just north of Dollar Bay, MI involving a utility pole.

The vehicle was reportedly “wrapped around” a power or telephone  pole.” Unclear on injuries.

U.P. Breaking News URGENT – Houghton County/Keweenaw County News and Public Safety Bulletin
Copper City, Michigan Power Outage due to hit and run wreck 11-12-16 3 a.m.

Officials are searching for a black pickup truck that crashed into a power pole about 2:40 this morning near the front of the Drift-Inn Bar in Copper City, MI.

The suspect fled the scene but police are narrowing in on the person – whose vehicle likely has heavy damage – black Chevy pickup.
Much of the area is reported without power – and the power pole is broken in half.

The suspect’s vehicle may have been located in nearby Phillipsville Location. But suspect may be fleeing/hiding on foot.

Meanwhile officials in the Copper Country may have a serious situation developing involving a man allegedly held against his will by a felon – but it remains to be seen what is happening.

(Carney, MI) – A accident is reported involving a motorcycle with a passenger and a vehicle near the Carney/Nadeau Township Volunteer Fire Department’s fire hall on U.S.-41 south. The two victims are expected to be taken to St. Francis hospital.

Numerous police, fire and ambulance emergency officials are en-route and on scene.

First reports indicate the two people on the motorcycle were conscious and breathing – but in roadway.

Please avoid this area.

Plus in Alger County, MI on U.S.-41 – a green Dodge mini van southbound on 41 in Trenary area driving reckless including doing circles around vehicles.

The structure fire is reported on G-18 Road just off U.S.-41.
Several fire departments are battling the fire.

A residence is reportedly in smoke and flames following a Gladstone explosion – on 715 Minnesota Ave.

The Escanaba Township Fire Department has been called for mutual aid. Rampart EMS was rolled for safety as firefighters battle the blaze. Power officials have also been notified.

Initial reports stove exploded – but that remains to be seen as police and firefighters probe the explosion on Minnesota Ave. Look out for emergency officials from all agencies.

A major manhunt and – hit and run investigation – is underway in the Gwinn, Mi area at this hour after a serious hit and run accident involving a the driver of a vehicle and a power pole.

The power pole is broken in half and the transformers are down in the street – no arching.

Forsyth Township Police are probing the accident – and the vehicle has fled the scene leaving behind a lot of damage on Jupiter St.

It appears police are searching vehicle leaking fluids allegedly driven by a K.I. Sawyer man last spotted driving toward Sporley Lake Rd.

Search for four-door purple passenger car with heavy damage.

The power pole is broken in half and the transformers are down in the street – no arching.

Injury – Car Fire Reported on Kelly Johnson Road near entrance to the Marquette County Airport.
It always good to take extra time going to make a flight, but for the next 30 minutes or more – drivers may be slowed by a reported car on fire with the driver reporting he is injured.

Responding are the Forsyth Township Fire Department and Forsyth Township First Responders plus an ambulance from U.P. Health System – Marquette.

(Escanaba, MI) – Delta County Search and Rescue has been called to help find a boy who slipped away from his mother at a Wells Township motel – but could not chase him because she had several others children to tend.

Officials are meeting in the area of the the Sunset Lodge motel at 6386 N 11th in Escanaba, MI.

The boy has been missing since about 3:40 p.m. – about an hour from time of this post.

Officials are gathering in a parking lot next to Upper Peninsula Concrete Pipe Company at 6480 US-2 in Escanaba.

The boy was wearing a blue T-shirt, blue jeans and black Nike tennis shoes.

The boy’s name is Aiden – and he got upset at mom and ran off.

He has a previous history of hiding in the huge concrete pipes at the plant.

Those assisting include Delta County Search and Rescue, the Delta County Sheriff’s Department and Escanaba Department of Public Safety.

Emergency officials are responding to assist a family involved in a water incident in Germfask, MI at Northland Outfitters in the Manistique River.

Northland Outfitters is on the 800 block of M-77.

The 44-year-old mom was in a kayak that overturned in the Manistique River – and she was stranded on the far shore of the river – so her 14 and 11 year old, daughter and son respectively, called 911 and requested helped reuniting with their mom.

No injuries reported but likely the river is flowing very fast.

U.P. emergency personnel are searching for crash scene between Republic, Michigan and North Republic, Michigan at an unknown location after victim emerges at relative’s home.

A 44-year-old man reportedly involved in wreck –  showed up at at a relative’s home in Republic and collapsed – apparently from crash-related injuries.

Crash apparently happened about 5 miles away – how he made it to a relative’s home is unknown.

Claims to be only one in vehicle. Exact location of wreck not known

Numerous law enforcement and emergency personnel are on there way to North Republic

Officials are heading to the 400 block of Republic Avenue in Republic – where crash victim showed up.

Cross streets are Front St. and Fourth Street in North Republic.

URGENT U.P. Breaking News Traffic Advisory and Bulletin: M-28 Chocolay Township

Update 9:50 p.m.

It began as a Marquette County Sheriff’s Deputy ran a name check on a possible passenger of a mini-van he was watching – a white mini-van.

A Chocolay township unit was requested for back up because a check showed the man was wanted on a charge of failure to appear in court for child support.

The sheriff’s department stopped the van on M-28 near Chocolay Downs.

“He’s running into the woods,” the deputy said while pulling over the vehicle and reading the license plate number.

Suspect may have fled because reportedly he has a $500 cash only bond on that warrant.

The suspect is reportedly 38-year-old local man.
U.P. Breaking News has his name – but a withholding maybe until he is in custody

The initials are J.P.A.

He has been tracked on the north side of the highway but originally fled on the south side in toward the golf course.

It appears the female driver was not wanted and the suspect took her cell phone to use for texting. She has apparently been released.

Manhunt continues.

Police are now tracking the suspect with a K-9 westbound in the area of Lakewood Lane headed toward Lake Superior.

A perimeter has been set up in the area of this manhunt said to be on M-28 east of Harvey – near the Chocolay Downs Golf Course.

Numerous police officers from several departments are searching for the suspect.
A K-9 has joined the search -latest said to be in general area behind Marquette fence Company – on the 1400 block of M-28 East.
Officials are back on some soggy trails looking for this man.

Not sure what he is wanted for – but it sounds like a traffic stop that ended up with warrants being discovered on an occupant – either way it is on warrants.
Not sure if new charges could be filed for fleeing and manhunt.

If you see a person fitting this description in your yard – or at your door – please call 911 for police asap. He could be wet and even out of breath.

U.S Highway 2/41 was just reopened in Menominee County after a fatal traffic accident.

Menominee County law enforcement, Michigan State Police and others are helping with the probe or helped at the scene. MSP Troopers have been on the scene of this accident for several hours. No information on this accident has been released by officials.

However through our sources – we have confirmed that the accident did have at least one fatality.

The accident was apparently reported around 7:25 p.m. Central Time.
No other information is available about this accident but we are working to gather more info.

Apparently a vehicle that police had been searching for after two reports to 911 – of the pickup truck driven by a female that was swerving across the centerline with a possible sleeping driver with an infant in a car seat

Vehicle “snapped guard rail” South of M-94 by the railroad overpass.

Skandia Township Fire Department and First Responders,the Marquette County Sheriff’s Dept.,  the Marquette County Extrication Unit 131,  ambulances, and state police are among those responding. The Unit 131 was cancelled shortly after leaving its station.

Marquette County declares emergency water rescues needed along Chocolay River in the Green Garden Rd. area – Ambulances, Rescue boats and officials are preparing for these rescues. Please check your family in these areas – and stay away from rising flood waters. Firefighters, search and rescue and firefighters are trying to rescue at least two residents and  by a boat.

Barricades are up.

County Road 545 is flooding.

Over 100 yards of pooling river surrounding the house – firefighters trying to help by wading – boats in route. The Chocolay River River is at “bridge level” and will wash the road out if it rises a couple more feet.

Severe Weather apparently causes lighting to strike eastern U.P. MSP Post

10-17-16 10:19 a.m.

The severe storms have caused routine calls for U.P. fire departments – until now – but likely all is OK.  Storms that rolled across the U.P. have mainly localized street flooding.

However, we just heard a report that the fire department has been sent to an eastern U.P. Michigan State Police Post – that is also connected to or shares space with the Michigan DNR.

We think it is Post 83 – St. Ignace but have decided not to bother officials since it sounds busy.
Its apparently has affected power.
If it warrants an update, we will pass it along.

It appears – Detour Fire was dispatched – but is being told to have extra units stand by at their fire dept.

Also – a non emergency run for Chocolay Township Police this morning as a homeowner on Cherry Creek Rd. reported a lightening strike – no fire or smoke – just electrical small in air and wanted to be safe.
Plus we have heard calls for trees on power lines – plus a transformer fire on M-133.

Three Vehicle Accident Involving Cargo Trailer with Injuries U.S.-41 in Humboldt Township in west Marquette County, MI.

Two minor injuries but it is a big mess.

One of the vehicle is said to be pulling a 20-foot cargo trailer. The victims received apparently minor injuries.

Two of the badly damaged vehicles are in traffic. Rear-end kind of accident – airbags deployed – wreckers needed. Nobody ejected.

Police are getting conflicting info on location of wreck U.S.-41 – near County Road FN – or near M-95.

Trees and branches falling, high winds, downed power lines and moving deer are making travel hectic in some areas and even dangerous.
There are too many to list.
However – the road commission had just cleared one tree on U.S. 2 – with help from police – when another tree down was just reported not too far away.
U.S. Highway 2 near Marenisco in western U.P. – Maple tree blocking “both lanes.”
Downed power lines, trees and branches have been reported in numerous locations.

Another tree down – now Marquette County on CR 550 – not sure exact location said to be in southbound lane – and that’s from a mine truck reporting to 911.

(Hurley, WI) – For the second time this weekend, an Upper Peninsula hospital was called on to treat a victim from a serious off-road-vehicle accident.

Another Important U.P. Breaking News Traffic Advisory 10-7-16 11:20 p.m.
In the past two weeks, we have noticed a big spike in car/deer accidents across the U.P. – at least two tonight including one was just reported on U.S. 2.
Remember its not the deer you see – its the one following it. Be extra cautious and aware – slow down if your are not in a hurry especially from dusk to dawn. But really all day.
Many Reasons:
These colder temps will trigger even more mating behavior plus with hunters now in the woods for various species – many deer are moving. Plus those setting up blinds for the Nov 15 opener.
As we reported a few weeks ago, moose are also on the move and pose a danger to drivers.
All an irony –  as the U.P. deer herd has decimated by state mismanagement – and is now estimated at less than 80,000 deer. Plus the wasting disease has been a huge issue in Wisconsin and across the Lower Peninsula – again from bad practices.

URGENT – URGENT:
U.P. Breaking News Traffic Advisory Update 11:16 P.M.
A helicopter will be landing soon either in a field or at the intersection of 426 and Cedardale roads.
Initial reports are good that the female victim with head injury who was hurt but all things seem positive.
The other three victims are “walking wounded” aka minor injuries.
Stay away from this area for at least another hour.

10-7-16 10:54 p.m.
Officials responding to an ORV accident reported in field on CR 426 (B-Road) – near Cedardale Road – in the Delta/Menominee County line area.
A helicopter is being launched as there are said to be four victims – one with a possible head injury.
Three other injuries not as serious.
Rampart Ambulance, several first responders including Cornell Township, several fire departments and numerous police are responding.
There seems to be an issue about a proper landing zone for the helicopter from U.P. Health System-Marquette that is stationed out of Escanaba.

2700 block of Wright St. – Marquette, MI – in hill and curve near gas company.
An awkward backing up job by a semi truck will be happening soon – and police will have to block traffic.
There are apparently two semis total and involves picking up a large piece of equipment and more.
One semi has made it in and another is coming.

(Bootjack, Michigan) – Four fire departments battled a fully engulfed house fire this afternoon that heavily damaged a ranch-style home on Lake Superior – however fire officials were able to save some of the residence and its contents in a blaze tracked to the fireplace and chimney.

The owner of the home is in a nursing home and the couple renting it were not at home at the time. There were no injuries in the fire at a residence on Rabbit Bay Road.

The fire was reported by a passerby about 2:39 p.m. today (Sun., Oct. 9, 2016) at 45576 Rabbit Bay Road along Lake Superior, said longtime Bootjack Fire Chief Dan Sarazin, a retired state trooper.

Flames were “shooting out of the back and through the roof – and outside toward the lake,” Chief Sarazin told U.P. Breaking News.

Four fire departments from across Houghton County battled the blaze. Assisting the Bootjack Fire Department were the Lake Linden Fire department, the Hubbell Fire Department, the Calumet Township Fire Department, and the Mercy Ambulance Service.

The home is owned by Kenneth Thompson – who is believed to be about 80 years old and in a nursing home – was renting it to a couple who are thought to be out of town but on their way back. The couple apparently purchased a lot next to the home and planned to rent the house this winter.

The house “is salvageable” and “can be rebuilt,” Chief Sarazin said, adding the fire departments were also able to save some of the contents – as the four departments quickly brought the blaze under control.

Sarazin said the initial estimate of damage is about $50,000. An online site – that estimates the value of homes – put the value of the residence as over $100,000 – although the exact figures could not be confirmed.

The home was engulfed when firefighters arrive.

“The house had been burning for a while” before it was spotted by a passerby, Chief Sarazin said. “It burnt through the metal roof” and burned through the siding.

Firefighters remained on the scene for about two hours. There were no injuries.

The lining failed “causing a failure of the joints” after creosote caught fire and burned its way through an area where the fireplace and the chimney connect, Chief Sarazin said. Creosote can smolder and burn for a while before erupting into a fire – and officials think it started after the fire in the fireplace had burned down maybe to embers. “It smolders and builds up heat,” Chief Sarazin said of the creosote.

These kinds of fires are common in fireplaces and often happen when a fireplace just starts to be re-used again when the weather cools – as has happened across the U.P.

Sarazin described the home as a newer structure – a single story ranch style wood frame house located on Lake Superior.

(Bootjack, MI) – Emergency vehicles including several fire departments were called Sunday afternoon to a fully-engulfed house fire on Rabbit Bay Road in the Bootjack, MI area.

The address of the house fire was reported as in the area of 45576 Rabbit Bay Road. The fire was reported about 2:45 p.m. on today Sun., Oct. 9, 2016.

The Bootjack, Lake Linden and Hubbell fire departments were called to battle the blaze.

The fire was reported knocked down at about 3:15 p.m.

Everyone was evacuated and no injuries were reported.

Officials are expected to be on the scene and traffic blocked for some time.
