Lagoon Failure: For three weeks, Grant Township, Michigan in Copper Harbor covered up a huge raw sewage leak into Lake Superior – MDEQ to cite township in Keweenaw County

(Copper Harbor, MI) – The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) plans to cite Grant Township in Keweenaw County for a huge raw wastewater leak into Lake Superior earlier this month – that was covered-up by some officials across Keweenaw County for three weeks.

The Grant Township Copper Harbor Waste Water Treatment Facility lagoon began leaking into Lake Superior during the first week of March 2018 – and the ttownship did not post a notice until this past Friday, March 23, 2018.

The notice was quietly posted on the township website – but the media was not contacted – and it apparently was known by others in Keweenaw County. Grant Township is located on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula and includes Copper Harbor, MI.

It seems inconceivable – but possible – that knowledge of the leak did not circulate in some areas of Keweenaw County. But to be clear, Grant Township is 100 percent at fault.

It is not known if the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department heard of the leak.

The MDEQ plans to file a citation against the township but no word on what effect such a citation would have.

Officials are claiming there is little risk to public health because the sewage mixed with winter conditions on the lake.

Notification Regarding the Copper Harbor
Waste Water Treatment Facility

During the weekend of March 3rd there was a failure in the primary
lagoon which resulted in a decrease of the level. On Monday the 5th the
DEQ and the engineering firm, OHM, were contacted. The WUP Health
Department has also been notified.

The DEQ has been extremely helpful and is investigating the situation.
However, the primary lagoon is covered by an enormous amount of
snow and ice. This is making it impossible to get inside to see exactly
what the problem is at present.

At this time, all influent is being directed into the secondary lagoon.
