Funeral services set for Trout Creek man and his 6-year-old son, who died in an Ontonagon County house fire

Funeral this Saturday for a man and his son killed in that Trout Creek house fire

(Trout Creek, M I) – Funeral services have been set this Saturday for a Trout Creek man and his young namesake who died in that Sunday morning house fire in Ontonagon County, MI.
 

Killed in the fire were 47-year-old David Saubert, Sr. and his six-year-old son David Saubert, Jr. The cause of the blaze is being investigated by the Michigan State Police Fire Marshal.

The fire on Sun., Feb. 11, 2018 destroyed the pair’s home on Old Mill Creek Road.

For the last 16 years, Saubert has been the Lac Vieux Desert Casino assistant supervisor of Maintenance in Watersmeet.

His Son “DJ” was a first grade student at the Ewen-Trout Creek School. 

A memorial service is set for 11 a.m. this Saturday, February 17, 2018 at the Ewen-Trout Creek School Gymnasium with the Pastor Todd Winkler officiating. David and DJ’s family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow at Twilly’s Bar and Grill in Bruce Crossing.

David Allan “DJ” Saubert Jr, age 6, of Trout Creek, passed away with his father on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at their home. He was born April 11, 2011 in Ironwood, MI, the son of David Allan Saubert and Christina Lynn Perttula.

DJ was a first grader at Ewen-Trout Creek School. He enjoyed riding his dirt bike, playing with his Tonka Trucks, and wrestling with his cousin, Zach. DJ loved the outdoors and everything it had to offer.

He is survived by his mother, Christina (Brandon Buch) Perttula of Trout Creek, MI; his grandparents, Walter and Paula Saubert of Bergland, Patty Perttula of Trout Creek, Kenny and Florence Perttula of Painesville, Frances Worachek of Bergland, and Lois Perttula of Trout Creek; his aunt, Beth Garcia and special cousins, Zach and Maddie Garcia of Trout Creek; his uncle Buddy Perttula of Painesville; his aunt, Lisa (Rob) Bearwald of Oshkosh; his uncles, Gregory (Melody) Saubert of Wakefield, and Walter Jr. (Karen) Saubert of Bergland; his other cousins, Krystal (Mark) Haeger of Montreal, WI, Dallas (Haley Swetkovich) Saubert of Ironwood, Mackenzie (Neil Balduc) Saubert of Bessemer, Kaelea Bearwald of Oshkosh, and Catlin Pietrowski of Flint, MI.

David Allan Saubert, Sr. 47, of Trout Creek, passed away with his son on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at their home. He was born November 27, 1970 in Wakefield, MI, the son of Walter and Paula (Graves) Saubert.

Dave graduated from Wakefield High School with the Class of 1989. He worked for Quad Graphics in Oshkosh for a year and returned to the area and worked as Assistant Supervisor of Maintenance for the Lac Vieux Desert Casino in Watersmeet for 16 years.

Dave was a kind hearted man who was always willing to lend a hand to family and friends with any project they needed. He enjoyed spending time with his son and supporting the Green Bay Packers.

He is survived by his parents, Walter and Paula Saubert of Bergland; his son’s mother, Christina Perttula of Trout Creek; his sister, Lisa (Rob) Berwald of Oshkosh; two brothers, Gregory (Melody) Saubert of Wakefield, and Walter Jr. (Karen) Saubert of Bergland; nieces and nephews, Krystal (Mark) Haeger of Montreal, WI, Dallas (Haley Swetkovich) Saubert of Ironwood, Mackenzie (Neil Balduc) Saubert of Bessemer, Kaelea Berwald of Oshkosh, and Catlin Pietrowski of Flint, MI.

(Marquette, MI) – A federal grand jury in Marquette on Tuesday returned sweeping indictments involving meth dealing in Baraga and Ontonagon counties.

A large crystal meth operation was allegedly run by two people in Baraga and Ontonagon counties while armed with a machine gun from the summer of 2017 to Oct. 13, 2017, in Baraga and Ontonagon Counties
.
In a separate case, “Cocaine Wayne” has been indicted for allegedly distributing meth and heroin in Ontonagon County on August 17, 2017.

The maximum penalty for all three is life in federal prison. State and federal drug agents are aggressively going after meth dealers in the Upper Peninsula. This includes UPSET, ATF and the DEA.

27-year-old Kathryn Maria Hellen of Ironwood and 43-year-old Dion Roy Jolliff were indicted Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2017 on the charges in Baraga County by a federal grand jury sitting in Marquette, MI.

41-year-old Wayne “Cocaine Wayne” Paul Langston of Ewen, MI was indicted by the same grand jury for allegedly distributing meth and heroin in Ontonagon County. These federal charges will likely supersede the current state charges against Langston.

Hellen is charged with seven felonies – and in addition to numerous meth charges – one charge is possession of a machine gun during the commission of a drug crime.

Jolliff is charged with five felonies for allegedly working with Hellen to produce large amounts of methamphetamines and distributed the drug in Baraga County.

Jolliff spent two years in state prison after his guilty plea in May 2015 on charge of controlled substance-possess narcotic/cocaine less than 25 grams in August 2014 in Ontonagon County.

Hellen’s defense attorney is Monica Mary Lubiarz-Quigley. The federal prosecutor is Assistant U.S. Attorney Maarten Vermaat.
