shooting-victim-cody-james-sormunen-1Private services were held for 21-year-old Cody James Sormunen, who was shot in the face with a shotgun, in what Michigan State Police say was reported as an accidental shooting on Wednesday, November 23, 2016.

The epitome of a popular All-Yooper outdoor lover and woodsman, Cody’s death has saddened many across the Upper Peninsula. He attended NMU and graduated from the Marquette Alternative High School, according to his Facebook page.

Tragically, it is Cody’s father David Sormunen who was reportedly involved in the shooting. Michigan State Police issued a press release following the shooting, however MSP did not issue an update or identify the victim.

State police crime scene experts are probing the shooting. Police confiscated a 12-guage shotgun. How the shooting accidentally occurred has not been released by MSP.

Among those responding were troopers from the MSP Negaunee Post (Detachment) and from two state police crime labs – the nearby MSP Marquette Crime Lab and MSP Grayling MSP Crime Lab.

“Following high school, he started working as a laborer for Wilbur Construction in Marquette. In his spare time he enjoyed being in the woods, cutting wood, and loved spending time with his friends and his girl,” states Cody’s obituary.
