(Chocolay Township, MI) – Some residents evacuated on their own, while others were helped by emergency officials as a Lake Superior ice jam caused the Chocolay River to rise in the darkness during blizzard-like conditions.

Ice has been building up out in the big lake – big blocks of ice that is pushed to the Lake Superior shore and the mouths of tributaries.

Officials believe the river is rising about a half an inch per hour.

**If there are flood waters outside your house – do not walk into the water – call 911.

(Chocolay Township, MI) – The residents along the mouth of the Chocolay River are reporting flooding – caused by Ice Jams where the river meets Lake Superior.

A resident at 165 Bayou Street said the water is “knee deep across the road.”

The flooding was first reported about 4:15 a.m. ET, today Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017.

“Some significant flooding” is occurring now in streets around the mouth of Chocolay River.

Flooding appears to be only in the areas/streets immediately around mouth of the river for now.
Officials say some residents appear stuck in their homes. It is too dangerous to walk in the rising, moving and ice cold river.

Among those assessing how to get to residents are Marquette County Sheriff’s Department Special Operations Unit, the Chocolay Township Police Department, the Chocolay Township Volunteer Fire Department – and others are likely to be called like search and rescue – and Rescue Squad 131.

We will be posting the drama rescue audio when law enforcement jumped into action quickly to save those on Green Garden Road – many had to go to second story because over four feet of water flooded their homes – then receded leaving behind a muddy awful mess.
“My refrigerator was floating.” said one evacuee who also evacuated to the motel in Harvey (by the way we left numerous messages for the America Red Cross in Marquette and they still have not called us back).
Evacuees were told that the Red Cross was going to help but we know of three families of evacuees that are still waiting for that help.
Not bashing the great red cross – just reporting a fact.

Heard that at least one renter is out of town – and their Green Garden Road cabin is a mess after over a foot of water flooded inside.
Hopefully I will be able to post some photos soon – having camera issues due to extreme dampness – the air is thick here.
Luckily the flood waters did not enter our home but we were surrounded by knee deep water – including 100 yards down driveway.
However the folks on Green Garden Road got it bad – and in the wee hours of the morning.
Many took refuge on their second floor due to the quick rise of the water – one said they knew the water was at their door so they tried to carry up a few valuables knowing it was inevitable.
Anyway – will be posting photos once my humidified cameras dry out – I hope.

On a personal note – thank you to the Marquette County/MSP 911 dispatchers in Negaunee, the Chocolay Township Fire Department and the Chocolay Township Police Department for their guidance and help.

A message from U.P. Breaking News:

U.P. Breaking News Chocolay Flooding Update 10-18-16 10:32 p.m.:
Knee deep water surrounds my home.
Have been meeting other evacuees as we stay at the hotel in Harvey because we evacuated around 4:30 p.m. as our home became an island.
One woman who lives on Green Garden Rd. said she awoke at 3 a.m. as her downstairs was about to flood – eventually four and a half feet high.
“Our refrigerator was floating,” she said.
She was among about 15 or more rescued by a bunch officials including the Chocolay Township Police and Fire Department – who checked on US thru out the day – and many more that we mention in our stories on our website.
The water then receded but left behind a huge muddy mess.
Just waded down about 100 yards of knee deep water (driveway) to get to my front door – and it just up to the door but has not gone inside – maybe 5 to 10- feet from front door – this id downstream off the end of N. Big Creek Rd.
Came to make sure our cats were OK because hotel doesn’t take cats but we took out dog.
All three beating heart are OK – and I am going to carefully wade back out to my car. Its weird being a “refugee.”

We evacuated at 4:40 p.m.

We will soon be making decision whether to evacuate – river now surrounding our home off N. Big Creek Rd.

Landlord says its OK

National Weather Service official says nobody knows how bad it will get – but he suggested we evacuate – and said this is worse flooding mess in at least 10 years

With extreme caution because the danger is real – officials are reporting that the rescues seem to be done and the waters of the Chocolay appear to be receding rather than rising.
While the rescues appear over the U.S. Coast Guard chopper was expected any minute to starting searching the area for others who need to be rescued and to survey the flooding by air.
But it is still a dangerous situation as – U.S.-41 South, portions of M-94 – and other roads remain flooded and some closed. Some roads in Alger County were reported flooded – and in Dickinson County officials checked campgrounds along the Sturgeon River.
Chocolay Township firefighters have been going door-to-door to many homes along the Chocolay River that are downstream from Green Garden Road to warn of the flooding danger. U.P. Breaking News has heard numerous reports of waters receding – but officials ask people to remain vigilant and report and flooding.
At least 15 people – and likely more – plus their pets have been rescued today from homes along the Chocolay River in the Green Garden Road area as federal, state and local rescue officials put their lives in danger in the rising flood waters.
Residents in several U.P. counties are either under flash flood or other advisories and warnings – beware.
Many washouts were reported in several counties – including Rock River Road in Alger County. Numerous roads plus U.S.-41 South in Marquette County are closed due to the flooding.
Earlier stories:
The USCG helicopter from Traverse City was launched to search wooded areas in case more people need to be rescue – plus to assess emergency.
Marquette County  Sheriff’s Department, USCG emergency water rescues along Chocolay River in the Green Garden Rd. area – Ambulances, Rescue boats and officials rescued numerous people.
Meanwhile – beware in Dickinson County if the Sturgeon River floods.
At least 12 people and their pets are thought to have been rescued.
Portions of U.S.-41 south have been closed.

Schools buses have been ordered to stay away from flooding areas.
At 5:36 a.m. – officials called for the U.S. Coast Guard to send a boat/manpower to Green Garden Rd. area.
Please check your family in these areas – and stay away from rising flood waters. Firefighters, search and rescue and firefighters rescued at least two residents and dog by a boat.

Barricades are up. Other rescues underway
County Road 545 is flooding.

**U.P. Breaking News will soon be release exclusive video and photos from the robberies and arrests.

(Harvey, MI) – Three suspects – all young males – are being questioned following an attempted holdup at a Chocolay Township hotel this morning that led to a hotel clerk pulling a gun on the knife-wielding suspects clad in dark clothes and masks – followed by a holdup at a convenience store a few miles away.

The robbery attempt occurred just before dawn (about 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, August 16, 2016) at the America’s Best Value Inn located at 1010 M-28 East at U.S. 41 South at the main intersection in Harvey in Chocolay Township.

Meanwhile the second robbery – occurred at Kassel’s Kornor at 6400 U.S. 41-South and County Road 480.

No word on how much was taken in the holdup.

The robberies are similar to one yesterday at the Quality Inn in Escanaba.

The masked suspects fled on foot after threatening the clerk with knives – and fled into a get away vehicle. The clerk pulled out a gun and scared off the would-be bandits.

The suspects were stopped by a team of officers from the Marquette Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s department and Michigan State Police.

A State Police K-9 unit was called but the search ended when police stopped the suspects a few miles from the motel. One of the suspects was witnessed being given a drunk driving exam by law enforcement.

The robbery is similar to an early Monday morning armed robbery at a Delta County Hotel.

An “armed and dangerous” lookout was been broadcast across the U.P. for two young men wearing bandanas who were involved in a stickup at a Delta County motel early yesterday (Monday, August 15, 2016) ).

Escanaba Public Safety is investigating the armed robbery that happened about 12:30 yesterday morning at the Quality Inn in Escanaba.

Both are considered armed and dangerous.

The all points bulletin was put out for two unknown males – at east one is a white male.

Both suspects are in their mid to late 20s.

The white male was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a blue bandana

The second suspect has the same age and dress description but was wearing a white bandana.

Both fled on foot but may have gotten into a getaway vehicle.

We will be providing even more exclusive details later this morning as U.P. Breaking News was the only media on both scenes and the arrests.
