(Neebish Island, Michigan) -Firefighters will be spending this noon hour at a building fire on an Eastern U.P. Island – and it’s the most recent in a spate of either wildfires or island fires.

“They are calling for more water – they need more tankers on the Island,” said a dispatcher at 11:46 a.m. – nearly 45 minutes after the original call.

Then:

“Bruce Township Fire – they are requesting a tanker for mutual aid – they need additional water,” the dispatcher said about 12 noon.

Several fire departments were dispatched shortly after 11 a.m. today (Tues., Nov. 15, 2016) to a building fire on Neebish Island

The outbuilding is located at or near 14886 S. Rue Des Roches Row Road located on the western edge of Neebish Island.

Firefighters were warned that unknown chemicals may be in the building said to be pumping out lots of smoke. Propane tanks were reported in the area.

Initially officials received a two-way radio call from an official on the island saying they quickly needed fire trucks. The dispatcher told the man to call their office.

The Sault Ste. Marie Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Bruce Township Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched. Not clear on which departments have responded after an initial cancellation page.

A reminder as hunters head into the woods for deer season, rain and snow are apparently coming but the forest and leaves remain very dry.  Windy weather makes it worse. Do not light fires if possible and use extreme care with cigarettes etc.

*Editor’s Note – Haven’t decided if I am going hunting this year – after 25 years in a row being out on opening day until two firearms seasons ago. The reason – a struggling U.P. deer herd – at under 80,000 deer. About 150 to 200 thousands deer are considered a healthy herd size by some biologists. If you can, let go let ’em grow.
