(Grand Rapids, MI) – A Honduran man arrested by the U.S. Border patrol with other illegal aliens at a Soo area construction site was sentenced on Wednesday by a federal judge in Grand Rapids, MI.

What’s a federal prosecutor to do?
You can not federally prosecute every illegal alien busted by the border patrol in the Soo. So the worst cases and leaders get federal felony convictions – before being deported. The rest are deported as soon as possible after being picked up by the border patrol.

What’s a federal judge to do?
For many illegals being sentenced to federal prison time is an option that many of the Mexican and Honduran worker prefer – over being shipped home – some make the round trip more than ten times.

A federal indictment charging “reentry of a removed (deported) alien” was returned by a federal grand jury against Honduran Martires Enrique Martel aka Martel Martires Enrique.

And as often happens – Martel was sentenced to time served – since his in Oct. 12, 2017 arrest in Cedarville, MI near the construction site of a new Family Dollar. Martel has been lodged in the Chippewa County Jail during the progression of his federal criminal case – now its deportation.

Martel was sentenced on Wed., Jan. 23, 2018 by U.S. District Court Judge Janet T. Neff in Grand Rapids, MI. On Dec. 15, 2017, Martel had pleaded guilty before by U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy P. Greeley in Marquette.

The federal prosecutors in the case are Assistant U.S. Attorney Donald Daniels in Grand Rapids and Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul D. Lochner in Marquette.
Martel was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Joanna Kloet. The interpreter was Ellen Donohue.

Next for Martel – a trip back to Honduras.
