(Allouez Township, MI) – With today’s fatal snowmobile crash in Keweenaw County – a least 8 people have died in Upper Peninsula snowmobile accidents this winter.
The latest fatal Upper Peninsula snowmobile crash was reported about 12:30 p.m. ET today, Thursday, March 8, 2018 on Snowmobile Trail Number 3, just over a mile north of U.S. Highway 41.
58-year-old Dale A. Wiza of Franklin, WI was killed just after noon today when he was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control in a curve, causing his snowmobile to roll several times.
Other snowmobilers, including a nurse, performed CPR on the victim.
He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Keweenaw County Medical Examiner.
The crash is being investigated by the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Department
Assisting were the Allouez Township First Responders, the Ahmeek Village Rescue Unit, Houghton Gouty Sheriff’s Department, and Mercy Ambulance Service that transported the victims to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.
Sadly, the U.P. has been averaging almost one snowmobile fatal accident per week since mid-December with. In a different type of winter tragic fatal accident, on Wednesday a 55-year-old Wisconsin man driving a Caterpillar Skid Steer died when he and his machine dropped through the ice on Thousand Island Lake in Gogebic County. The victim was snowplowing to assist a barge.
