(Gwinn, MI) – A 23-year-old Marquette County  man – who has already served time for other crimes including meth – is jailed this morning on charges he operated and maintained a meth lab in Forsyth Township.

He has recently been released from prison for making meth.

Devin Charles Dahlstrom remains in the Marquette County Jail after being arrested by Forsyth Township Police on Halloween night, Mon., Oct. 31, 2016 after a manhunt that followed a brief chase.

A massive search for Dahlstrom was conducted in the the S. Blue Lake Road and E. Johnson Lake Road area.

Officers focused on an area surrounding 96 E. Johnson Lake Rd. Inside the vehicle, police reportedly found what is known as an “active one pot” – a bottle or similar container making a small amount of the highly addictive drug that has ruined thousands of lives.

Dahlstrom has been convicted of several past felonies including meth charges, resisting arrest and two counts of auto theft.

Sentencing is something Dahlstrom apparently feels strongly about – as he has a tattoo on his back that reads “Only God can judge me” – according to Michigan Department of Corrections Records.

When released from prison last year Dahlstrom’s supervised released requirements included not to do illegal drugs.

In Dec. 2013, Dahlstrom – who was 20 years old at the time – was sentenced to almost a year in jail with credit for time served for meth possession. In exchange, two other meth charges were dropped.

In October 2013, Dalhstrom was arrested with Jennifer Laakso, 29, after a traffic stop on County Road 496 in Ely Township. That time, police found items for a meth lab in the vehicle. Laakso pleaded guilty to possession of meth and remains in state prison. In addition to drugs, her criminal history includes third degree child abuse.

(Marquette, Michigan) – Two teen boy runaways from Great Lakes Recovery are now said to be armed and dangerous as an Upper Peninsula broadcast has been issued to all law enforcement agencies.

The Negaunee teens allegedly stole a car Sunday night after escaping earlier in the day from Great Lakes Recovery and then reportedly trying to me up with a female juvenile. If you have any information on these two young white males in their early teens please call your nearest law enforcement agency.

Lock all vehicles and remain vigilant. If you spot any suspicious looking people – please call the police because the youths could now be anywhere in the U.P. including still in Marquette County or delta County.

The manhunt involves numerous police agencies including the Marquette Police Department, A K-9 Unit, Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and Negaunee Police Department.

The wanted teens may even have fled to the Deltas County area but were last spotted early today (Halloween 2016), Oct. 31, 2016 in the Marquette area.

For several hours early today police set up a perimeter around several exclusive Marquette neighborhoods on all sides of Shiras Hills off U.S.-41 south. This after a stolen car allegedly taken by the boys was recovered in the area. The stolen car is owned by Adam Karki of Negaunee. There were no injuries reported in the auto theft and police have found evidence allegedly linking the youths to the crime.

Police believe the suspects may now be armed with a handgun and shotgun ammo. One of the boys may be wearing a jacket that is said to be a referees jacket.

(Marquette, MI)  – A Halloween manhunt is underway this windy, cold and damp Monday morning in several exclusive Marquette, Michigan neighborhoods after a stolen vehicle was recovered by police and suspects were apparently spotted by witnesses.

A perimeter was been set up early today, Monday, Oct. 31, 2016 – around the Shiras Subdivision and as far west the Marquette Mountain area –  Granite Pointe Drive and Division St. Several subdivisions are being searched. Police were hoping to see up eyes in all areas where the suspects could escape the manhunt – and the weather is no help.

In fact, even the time of year wasn’t a big help as police reportedly had to check several Halloween displays including a very large artificial pumpkin.

The manhunt involves numerous police agencies including the Marquette Police Department, A K-9 Unit, Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, and Negaunee Police Department.

The Negaunee Police Department is involved in the manhunt because the agency was already investigating the case of two teen runaway boys.

It had not been confirmed that the teen boys from Negaunee were involved in the auto theft case, but reportedly witnesses described two youths running from the area that may fit the descriptions of the youths.

One of boys was in shorts and the other an orange Hoodie.

Already proof of poverty and hunger issues to come in Marquette, MI and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan

(Marquette, MI) – Three incidents of hunger and cold over the past two days in Marquette, MI shows the gales of winter’s poverty and homelessness have come early as the Upper Peninsula.

In fact, the U.P., itself is barely coming to grip with the extent of the growing poverty and a hunger crisis – and if there is any substance abuse issues involving the hungry – all rules seem to get thrown out the window.

State budget cuts and high unemployment ate taking their toll.

The Marquette, Michigan Poverty Incidents Fri., Oct. 28, 2016 and today Sat., Oct. 29, 2016 (so far):

  • A short while ago on this cold Saturday morning a man was begging for food money for his hungry child on Bike Path – possible name is Steve Mert (sp? – we would like to talk to him).

  • Friday – Police called to local restaurant because hungry people were “dumpster diving”

  • Friday – twice on Friday police called to an exclusive neighborhood in north Marquette where a male and a 15-year-old female show up asking to be let inside because they are cold and hungry – they claimed to be neighbors but man who called police did not recognize them.

The Warming Center and the faith-based Room at the Inn Project do what they can – with almost no money. They are forced to weed out – send packing or arrested – all those who have been drinking or doing drugs. Police do not have the jail space to lock away the problem – nor should they be expected.

The problem is likely to get worse as the snow blankets the U.P.

Out of real fear, should people not help those who arrive at their door seeking help?

What would Jesus or any of the faith leaders do?

How many will die this winter suffering in the frozen U.P.?

How cold are we as humans with people who are fallible?

U.P. Breaking News Exclusive: Officials tight-lipped after Marquette, MI woman arrested in alleged felony extortion investigation

U.P. Extortion Probe Arrest

(Marquette, MI) – At least one Marquette resident has been arrested in connection with an Upper Peninsula extortion investigation, U.P. Breaking News has learned.

The investigation led to at least one arrest yesterday in Marquette County.

A 49-year-old Marquette woman made bond yesterday (Thurs., Oct. 27, 2016) after being accused of alleged felony extortion.

Police arrested Kathryn Marie White of 316 E. Crescent St. in Marquette, MI. White was taken into custody at her residence. A check shows she was released on bond – though details of that bond – or the exact nature of the allegations – have not yet been released.

It is not clear – who or what entity – is the “victim” of the alleged extortion – and the charge if not oft used.
In fact, even compared to the filing of a state murder charge in the U.P., a state extortion charge is rarer – minimum 50 to one.

Marquette County Prosecutor Matt Weise won’t be back until next week, according to officials in his office. Those officials declined to release any information when U.P. Breaking News provided a name and the charge – and instructed us to check back next week.

U.P. Breaking News left a message for Marquette Police Department Captain of Detectives Mike Kohler.

U.P. Breaking News attempted to contact White.
White is listed as he registered agent of a limited liability corporation (LLC) she formed in Nov. 2013 named “Bianchetti White LLC,’ according to online websites that follow the creation of state of Michigan corporations.

Recently a northern Michigan businessman was arrested on an extortion charge – however a judge dismissed the case and that decision is being appealed by the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.

Past extortion cases in Marquette were federal investigations.

One U.P. extortion case involved a Hollywood celebrity . In that federal extortion case, two Marquette residents served four years in federal prison for trying to extort $680,000 from Actor John Stamos. In Oct. 2010, Scott Edward Sippola, 31, and Allison Lenore Coss, 24, both of Marquette, Michigan, were each sentenced to four years in federal prison after being found guilty of multiple federal felonies. Both were released from federal prison in March 2014.

State of Michigan – Extortion statutes/law information as provided on the website of a Lower Peninsula lawfirm – Rumschlag Law, PLC in downstate Birmingham, MI

On April 3rd, 2014, the Michigan Supreme Court held that the crime of extortion does not require analysis of “the seriousness or significance of the compelled act” under MCL 750.213 and partially overruled two Michigan Court of Appeals decisions.

In People v Harris, Docket No. 146212, the Michigan Supreme Court first summarized the prior proceedings in the case:

Under the plain language of the extortion statute, MCL 750.213, extortion occurs when a defendant maliciously threatens to injure another person with the intent to compel that person to do any act against his or her will, without regard to the seriousness or significance of the compelled act, overruling People v Fobb, 145 Mich App 786 (1985), and People v Hubbard (After Remand), 217 Mich App 459 (1996), to the extent that those decisions required that the act or omission compelled by the defendant be of serious consequence to the victim.

Under the plain language of the extortion statute, the crime of extortion is complete when a defendant (1) either orally or by a written or printed communication, maliciously threatens (2) to accuse another of any crime or offense, or to injure the person or property or mother, father, spouse or child of another (3) with the intent to extort money or any pecuniary advantage whatever, or with the intent to compel the person threatened to do or refrain from doing any act against his or her will.

The Court of Appeals decisions in Fobb and Hubbard, which held that the act demanded of the victim must have been of serious consequence to the victim in order to convict a defendant of extortion, are contrary to the plain language of the statute.

A statute may be challenged for vagueness on three grounds:

(1) that it fails to provide fair notice of the conduct proscribed

(2) that it is so indefinite that it confers on the trier of fact unstructured and unlimited discretion to determine whether an offense has been committed

(3) that its coverage is overbroad and impinges on First Amendment protections.

From A Deadly “Nerd Alert” Into A “Narcan Alert” on highway: Trying to save a drug overdose victim’s life on the side of U.S. 41 West in Negaunee, MI on otherwise quiet morning in Marquette County – A life possibly saved by Michigan State Police, other officers and emergency medical officials

A battle of life and death literally unfolded this morning on the side of U.S. Highway-41 west near Negaunee, MI

COPS SAVED A LIFE IN U.P. THIS MORNING

narcan-graphic

The only difference is this overdose played out in public – as officers and emergency officials worked feverishly and saved a OD victim’s life

“Nerd Alert” but not the kind you likely grew up hearing in high school – until recent years

TODAY NARCAN ALERT AND MSP SAVED A LIFE!

Halloween Happiness – Sweet Life

(Negaunee Township) – It began as an early morning apparently routine traffic stop on U.S. -41 west near Heritage Drive in Negaunee Township.

But it turned into a life-and-death drama on a Upper Peninsula highway.

It started about 3:45 a.m today Thurs., Oct. 27, 2016.

msp-logo-3A Michigan State Police trooper reported he needed assistance on a “3500” stop aka – a Controlled Substance Violation.

But that trooper from the Negaunee Post added his status was good. That means – by that point – the trooper suspected it was a drug-related situation – but all was well.

At least for a couple minutes it was.

As several officers routinely headed toward the traffic stop to lend a hand – the MSP trooper said he needed an ambulance quickly – for a possible drug overdose – and the Negaunee Township Fire Department and and an ambulance from U.P. Health System-Bell.

“Narcan administered,” a trooper blared over the radio – the urgency of the situation clearly portrayed by his voice.

A short time later:

“Narcan administered twice.”

Troopers are reportedly told the “boyfriend” suspects it might be an overdose of a drug that cops know all too well: Neurontin.

Some know it by a nickname: Nerds – a slang reference named after a commonly sold box of small multi-colored candies. This “Nerd Alert” literally meant life or death – not that old high school sophomoric effort to embarrass someone who loves computers.

Neurontin is widely known by Upper Peninsula addicts including its cheaper generic form called “Gabapentin.” The drug is widely abused by some addicts who steal it or buy it from people with nerve disorders like neuralgia symptoms often associated with the diabetes epidemic.

Some addicts stick to “Nerds” but others often mix them with a drug lifestyle in general. A growing and sad problem in every U.P. community that happens every day. Hopefully – one life was saved this morning.

At last word, the woman was being treated by doctors. But would be taken to jail once she is better.

Both the woman and her “boyfriend” reportedly face drug charges – as police took the male to the Marquette County Jail.

U.P. Breaking News Shocking Exclusive: Federal tribal domestic violence charges dropped against non-Indian Bobby Lee Jones Jr. in Menominee County, MI – while alleged Native American female DV victim Veronica Mae Williams was arrested

Native American woman arrested after Domestic Violence claim led to arrest of non-native man in southern U.P. – as federal prosecutors apparently change their minds on who is the victim and who is the suspect – Bobby Lee Jones, Jr. was ordered released from jail today

(Marquette, MI) – In a stunning turn of events – a man accused of domestic violence on southern Upper Peninsula tribal lands was ordered freed today – and the alleged native female victim arrested.

Details of the turn of events are not clear – but it appears federal officials were having a hard time getting the alleged victim to testify – and have left open the possibility that charges could be refiled against the suspect – who is a free man.

The (non-Indian) man originally charged – Bobby Lee Jones, Jr. – was ordered released today after federal prosecutors moved to dismiss all charges without prejudice. Jones was ordered released from custody early today by U.S. Magistrate Judge Timothy P. Greeley.

Meanwhile the native woman who made the allegations – Veronica Mae Williams – was ordered arrested on Oct. 12, 2016 – by request of federal prosecutors.

The woman was picked up on a material witness arrest warrant. It is not clear if she remains jailed. The material witness warrant was made by federal prosecutor Hannah N. Bobee, who has a solid track record of throwing tribal domestic violence offenders in prison.
“Veronica Mae Williams is a necessary and material witness in a proceeding before the Court and it appears that said witness may not appear unless brought before the Court,” the motion states.
However since that time – Asst. U.S. Attorney Bobee has dismissed charges – without prejudice – against Jones.

Background:

Bobby Lee Jones, Jr. was arrested after officials filed an “information” – one of the tools federal prosecutors use to file criminal charges. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor. That charge has since been dropped. It was filed with the federal clerk’s office on Mon., August 29, 2016 at the U.S. District Courthouse in Marquette, MI.

Jones, a non-native, was accused of assaulting a Native American female “with whom he had a dating relationship.”

The alleged victim said the incident happened on Sunday, Aug. 28, 2016 “in Indian Country” in Menominee County, although further details were not released.

Its not clear whether the attack happened on lands claimed by the Hannahville Indian Community or the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin – that both have tribal lands inside Menominee County, MI.

The charge is “assault by striking, beating or wounding.”
U.P. Breaking News was withholding the identity of the victim identified only as V.M.W.

Please MSP Troopers or any cops – I beg of you.
If I am found dead on a beach – please don’t decide my life in four days.

In what might be the strangest and quickest death investigations every whipped out by Michigan State Police – the cops say they are sure it there was no foul play at Whitefish Point, Michigan.

aly-1

In near record time, Michigan State Police say 42-year-old Allyson Motlinski-Jenkins of downstate Maybee, Michigan – definitely was not a victim of foul play in Chippewa County.

Her body was discovered just this past Saturday (10-22-16) on a cold, wind-whipped Lake Superior beach at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum in Whitefish Point, MI.

U.P. Breaking News has done many editorials and stories about the skyrocketing suicide problem in the U.P. – and if her death is the latest stat in the U.P. epidemic of taking one’s own life. So be it. But not everyone buys it. One thing MSP detectives know for sure in four days – no reason to suspect foul play.

The suicide crisis also underlines the ongoing issue of under-funded northern Michigan mental health system – thanks to crooks like Gov. Snyder. When is that guy finally going to prison?

In 40 years of covering street news, this reporter has never heard of a bungee cord suicide on a beach – not to say it can’t happen. Who knows – MSP seem so sure of themselves – sure to say it was not foul play – whatever they say killed her. You see they have not released much – but one local TV stations says there are no suspects at large.

Hmmm – we can wait to hear what the public thinks – is it just me? Is it bungy cord suicide on a beach a real thing?

Well, MSP weren’t the only ones trying to convince people it was not foul play – some were yelling that it was a suicide from the start. We will leave it at that.

It bears saying one more time – if you ever find my body and I have choked – in anyway connected – or remotely connected to – a bungy cord – please do not be so quick to rule it wasn’t foul play. Or any kind of suicide.
