(Escanaba, MI) – A general alarm fire at the Verso Corporation Paper Mill in Escanaba, MI on Sunday included ruining a huge and very expensive crane – where the fire may have started.
At 4:02 p.m. Sunday, all nightshift Escanaba Department of Public Safety officers and firefighters to report to work because of the blaze at the paper mill.
The blaze was reported about 3:40 p.m. ET this afternoon, Sun. April 8, 2018. It is said to be in a large storage shed on the back of the property.
Said to be the largest local employer, the Verso mill is located off U.S.-2/41 at 7100 County Road 436 in Escanaba.
Lots of emergency officials are responding to the blaze including numerous firefighters.
The first Escanaba Public Safety police officers to arrive in the area reported heavy black smoke and flames coming from the large pole shed.
Fire officials believe the fire started in and around a large expensive and valuable crane parked inside the building. The suspected trigger was connected to the huge crane’s hydraulic system as investigators believe there was a short or faulty connection in a heater.
Responding firefighters and law enforcement have been told to use the rear gate.
“Guards will take you to the upper road,” the Delta County 911 dispatcher told those responding to the scene.
